“Foodie” Fridays in Austin
Sometimes you just feel like a sandwich instead of a big meal. I’ve got 3 choices for some of the best sandwich shops in Austin. One is located in an old pharmacy and one travels around in a school short bus reminding you of the fun times you used have during lunch at shool.
1. HILLSIDE FARMACY http://hillsidefarmacy.com
Hillside Farmacy, a sandwich shop located in an old pharmacy, will charm you right down to the little old-fashioned blue bottles they use for salt & pepper shakers. Initially intended to be a neighborhood grocery, deli and bar, it has now shifted more to a restaurant/bar atmosphere. You can, however, still purchase some grocery items such as bread, pastries and cold cuts. What you’ll find on the menu are dishes like oysters on the half shell and peel your own shrimp and salads like the house salad with baby lettuce, sweet cherry tomatoes, onion & cucumber in a light vinaigrette dressing. Sandwiches include the Dough Well Done which is quite large with creamy melted cheese and fresh tomato slices on soft Challah bread or the Grinder which is an Italian sandwich made of salami, ham, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickled Italian peppers served on a crusty baquette. Seasonal specials are served at brunch and dinner time like Oysters Rockefeller: piping hot fresh oysters topped with béchamel and golden breadcrumbs served with lemon slices and pickled onions. With the cocktails and espresso drinks, a raw bar, a soda fountain, breakfast items and baked goods among your choices, you’re sure to find something to please your palate any time of the day.
2. TOASTIES http://ilovetoasties.com
The owner of Toasties has a “ mission to serve you quality food at reasonable prices - bridging the gap between everyday eateries and those upper end bistros. At the same time educating and supporting Austins local and national breweries”. They’ve been nominated for austin360.com’s A-list for Best Sandwich in Austin! A sample of what you’ll find there would be The Cuban: slow roasted pull pork, ham & pickle stackers sandwiched between swiss cheese with a combination of spicy brown & honey mustards served pressed on their Cuban Loaf. Another choice would be The Bambino: grilled chicken sautéed with basil pesto, fresh baby spinach, bacon & pepperoni piled into a warm pita with melted mozzarella topped off with gorgonzola cheese and their green chile cilantro ranch dressing. If a salad is more what you’re looking for, the Banh Mi Salad might be just right: slow roasted pulled pork topped with cucumber, pickled onion and carrots served on a bed of baby spinach and shredded cabbage, topped with a squeeze of lime and sweet red chile sauce. But, it’s important to note that Toasties is more than just a sandwich shop: there’s sandwiches, smoothies, beer, ice cream, pizza, arcade games and darts. So, get comfortable and get ready to relax at Toasties – you could be there longer than you planned!!
3. SHORT BUS SUBS http://shortbussubs.com
To quote the owners “it all started with a dream and a bus”. Austin locals, brothers Eric & Dane Klusman and Ryan Campion turned that dream into reality. Their goal is to bring you great tasting hot sandwiches in the most fun way possible…a school bus! They want to reinvent the sack lunch and help people remember how fun lunchtime used to be. But, don’t let that fool you, you’ll be served gourmet sandwiches on fresh baked from scratch bread, tasty sides, fresh baked cookies and beverages all brought to you in their original short bus. What’s nice is they support local Austin vendors, buying fresh local produce and using biodiesel fuel which along with helping the environment, supports Texas corn farmers to produce the ethanol blend. The Short Bus is always on the move, frequenting businesses for lunch, downtown for late night munchies and all over the Austin music and party scene. Their sandwiches are all “school themed”. On their deli menu you’ll find The Principal: smoked turkey, honey ham, roast beef, swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato with mayo and Dijon mustard or Spring Break: smoked turkey, swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing. The veggie menu has choices like The Librarian: cream cheese, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, swiss cheese and tomatoes or The Cheerleader: cream cheese, onions, avocado, lettuce tomato and salsa. And, last but certainly not least is The Hot Teacher: sun-dried tomatoes, roasted portabella mushrooms, red peppers, sun dried tomato pesto, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. Whatever you order, I can guarentee you'll enjoy hanging out with The Short Bus!
