Sheriff's Office set to honor 9/11 victims

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty - Murfreesboro TN

Over 3,000 victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will be remembered when a monument to their memory is dedicated to them on Sept. 11, 2012 at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

The monument centerpiece is a 3,000-pound I beam that was donated from Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. Urns will be surrounding the I beam to represent the victims on the planes that hit the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pa.

Memorial bricks bought by citizens will be put around the memorial.

The Rutherford County Honor Guard will conduct a 21-gun salute toward New York and the Murfreesboro Fire Department will do a salute with a bell.

Contributions of money and materials along with the sale of memorial bricks and challenge coins made it possible for the memorial to be built without tax money. People can purchase bricks and coins to help fund the flagpoles and concrete.

The free community event is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office on 940 New Salem Highway.

Zone Status will perform at 4 p.m.

Parking will be available at the sheriff’s office. Murfreesboro’s Rover bus service will bring visitors from a parking lot on Park Avenue to the sheriff’s office.

“I don’t know of another landmark in the state of Tennessee that is so suited for the community in remembering the tragedy of 9/11,” Deputy Greg Dotson said.

Next to the memorial is the Fallen Officers Memorial Garden created by Boy Scout Austin Janke as his Eagle Scout project. Some inmates also helped with the labor.

“He went far beyond what an 18-year-old high school student could have done,” Dotson said.

More features of the community event include:

• Displays of emergency vehicles from Police and the fire departments.

• Games sponsored by the U.S. Navy Recruiting Office.

• Jump Bounce inflatables for kids sponsored by Dave Gober and First National Bank of McMinnville.

• Petting zoo by Bill Boner.

• Demonstrations by the Martial Arts Academy of Murfreesboro.

• A display of automobiles by Ford of Murfreesboro.

• Sale of baked goods by churches & nonprofit groups. Money from the booths will be donated to A Soldier’s Child, a group created to help children whose parents passed away while serving in the military.

Citizens at the observance can buy food from vendors like Chick Fil A, Buffalo Wild Wings, Bonefish Grill, Little Caesar’s pizza and the Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post.
