Toady Nation

As the presidential election nears, politicians and their media toadies are turning up the rhetoric, aware that the average voter is too (stupid, apathetic, distracted, gullible, or biased—pick one) to see beyond the lies and distortions that are being bandied about. And therein we discover America’s problem. With a majority who, for whatever reason, refuse to educate themselves before casting their ballots, voting has become corrupted to the point of being a meaningless component of the electoral process. Perhaps Mark Twain was correct when he said: “If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.”

From my perspective we're close to the tipping point where the majority of voters are receiving some sort of financial benefits from the minority of voters, and no one is willing to give up the benefits they receive for the good of the nation.

Sometimes I just want to scream.

The lies, distortions and obfuscations are not easy to hear when you know you are really powerless.

Not that half the country is receiving handouts, that number should put the folks handing out over the top.

I've never been so pessimistic.

Lloyd - Sad, but true.

Lenn - Sometimes I do scream.

I scream too.  It's maddening.  They play to the Moron Vote.

Last week's Free Enterprise Quote dealt with this very thing.

Jay - Your post was on target, but few seem to grasp the true significance or are willing to make the commitment.

IMHO, we've become a nation of people that identify themselves, first, by what party they vote for...in other words, more tribal, not less.  And to a certain extent, I'm not very different. There was a time I voted both Democrats and Republicans, but with it's current platform, the denial of science and mismanagement of the main issues that face our country I just can't bring myself to vote for ANYONE that belongs to that 'club' (the Republican Party).

Karl - That's why they make Fords and Chevrolets; we don't all think alike. However, I've read the 2012 Republican Platform and am not aware of sections which deny science or, for that matter, which portend the mismanagement of the serious issues facing our country.

While there are certainly flawed candidates from both parties, it seems to me that voting strictly upon political affiliation is both dangerous and reflectve of an unwillingness to become informed on the specific issues and positions of individual candidates.

And I do hope you will base your vote on what you know to be true, instead of what others tell you is true.

That is very small Karl.  You really surprised me with that one.  I NEVER vote party, or religion, or eye color, or any other characteristic that is not atune with my philosophy.

I vote free market and free enterprise.  I NEVER vote for or against what someone says they will do.  I vote for HOW they say they intend to do it!

I would certainly vote for Pericles.  You apparently would not.

That "club?"  The Rep party is more fractious than the Dem party this time around.

John -- Washington state just saw its primary election participation drop to the lowest level ever.  It seems that EVERYONE has an opinion on why this happened, but most are unwilling/unable to see the way to getting participation back up to historic levels (which were only high 40-low 50%).   Hopefully enough people will be energized by November that we can get a good turnout in the general election.

Steven - I'd love to have a great turnout--after all it is our civic duty--but I'm much more concerned with having a turnout of informed voters.

My brother (Liberal) and I (Conservative), disagree on MANY points, but agree on MANY as well. I "respect" HIS view as he has studied it an truly believes in it. I hope he returns the respect.
