Overlooking your water system and not maintaining it would be like not changing your cars oil and filter and expecting it to run for years with no problem. If you did this to your car one of these morning you would be sitting on the side of the road during your morning commute. Have you ever run out of water or had no water situation occur on a weekend, late at night or on the dreaded work day morning when you’re covered in soap in the shower and wondered….Why is this happening to me? Its not just you everyone who has had a system malfunction on their water system knows 9 out of 10 times it will happen at the most inconvenient times however it can be avoided by maintaining your system.
This situation occurs when you are reactive as opposed to proactive when it comes to your homes water supply. Now I am not trying to tell you have to do preventative maintenance on your well system every 3000 miles however this article does outline recommended precautions and testing available to maintain the health of your water well system.
How can I maintain the water quality of my system? The answer is easy a simple water quality test can tell you everything in regards to your water chemistry. The test is painless and involves a technician coming out with little test bottles gathering a sample and bringing it to the laboratory for testing. Easy Peasy!!
With the research I have compiled by the EPA and The State health departments of Massachusetts and New Hampshire I was able to put together a testing schedule based off of their recommendations as follows:
Yearly- Bacteria
3-5 years- Basic test
5-7 years- Comprehensive testing
7-10 years- Extensive Testing (including VOC)
Please Note however that if you have filtration in place its not only important to maintain the Quality testing schedule but also have your filtration specialist Maintain and service the system regularly as your filtration Is only protecting your family if it is functioning appropriately.
How Can I Maintain the Mechanics of my Water Well pumping system? It’s recommended by the National Groundwater Association and Water System Council to have a Yearly mechanical inspection done. We recommend a yearly or Bi- yearly inspection to be completed by a qualified technician. It should be expected as part of the inspection for the well technician to do a visual and mechanical inspection of the system, notating any system faults or shortcomings. The inspector should be using Ohm and Amp meters to take electrical reading of the Pumping system and checking the air pressure of the tank among others. They will inspect filtration in line and will be able to tell you exactly what if anything is wrong with your system operations. What many people do not realize is that when one part of the system malfunctions if has a trickle effect and can short or burn out other aspects of the system resulting in costly repairs. When Maintenance is preformed it gives you the ability to financially prepare for repairs, schedule time of to have repairs completed and avoid costly emergency after hours or weekend costs that result from an Emergency No water.
