Up until now, our whale sighting reports have been zero since January 1st.

Nothing, nada, zilch...

I went in search of our famous mother/baby duo on Saturday, January 5th and found nothing.

I even called Jim Hain, Scientist from Woods Hole, Woods Hole, Massachusetts to see if they (him and Joy Hampp, Project Coordinator for The Marineland Right Whale Project) were out watching the whales anywhere.

Jim told me no, no whales had been sighted, but if I made it as far north as Marineland to please stop and say hi.

I did make it that far and stopped to see Jim. I was treated to photographs that Joy had taken from the Projects spotter plane of Arpeggio and her baby.

Read more about the photo I saw and the recent sightings here

Photo used above is a photo I took in 2006 in Ormond By The Sea of a Mother Calf pair. It could be a Right Whale known as Piper with her calf. She was in the area that day along with another Right whale and her baby.

I do not have persmission to use anyone else's photo's of the whales at this time, and will not take anyone's photos without their permission. This is why I keep using photos from the 2006 Right Whale season for my blog. For those of you that don't know, it is illegal to use other people's photos without their permission unless otherwise stated from the photographer.

Lysa, and now the whales and dolphins have one more thing to worry about, now that bush has waved his magic pen, and the navy no longer has to adhere to the restrictions about using sonar when marine mammals are present.  You may never see that mother and baby again!

Lysa - I certainly hope they make it back to the area so you can take a couple photos.  Just to see those magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is overwhelming.

Lysa, It's wonderful that you're keeping track and may just get a sight of them yet....I'm hoping you will!  It would be thrilling for you to get some shots and for us to see them. Good luck!

Carole, Thrilling is another good word :). I have received permission to post a photo of the famous pair that Joy took from shore and will post soon!

Kathy, Thank you. Using someone elses photo without permission is like plagerism and is wrong but it isn't that well known of a fact unless one is a photographer. Lenn Harley is good at teaching AR members about as well. :)

Lysa, I've never seen whales in Florida.  My cousin saw one out in the gulf once years ago and I didn't believe him!  LOL

Chris, we have a few different species of whales here, the Right Whale, the Humpback, and Dwarf Sperm Whale have paid me visits. I believe Pilot Whales hang out in the Keys. Your poor cousin! We actually had Right Whales go all the way over there to the gulf a couple years ago. The scientists were scared they woudln't make it back around the state but they did :)
