Lakefront Real Estate Oregon: Endless Summers

Endless summers….

Do you recall as a child how endless summers seemed to be? The countdown of days til summer officially began, the plans with friends and family—sleeping in, (or not) and having hours upon hours to play.

 Thousand Islands New York

One of the summer delights that I experienced as a child and as a young person, was going to our cottage in the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River, a tributary of Lake Erie between New York and Canada.

You had to get on a boat as your transportation to get to Murray Isle, where our cottage was located, as there were no cars on the island; just homes, docks, a post office and a library! My sister and I were 5th generation of family to own property on Murray Isle and it was pretty rustic summer living as a small child.

Thousand Islands New York-Gayle Rich-Boxman

(This was taken from the front window and is our old boathouse where my dad's photo of his pike was taken years before--see below).

We had an outhouse, no drinkable water and you had to bring everything that you planned to live on for the summer up the long pathway from the boat into our cottage, many many times. There was a pump house located 1/3 of the way around the island, and my younger sister and I would trek along the well-worn and rocky path to the pump house, hauling empty plastic gallon jugs to be filled with fresh potable water and brought back to the cottage. It was quite a feat lifting that heavy metal handle and pushing it up and down vigorously at least 10 times before any water would come out and quite tricky holding the gallon jug under it so that the fiercely cold water would end up IN the jug and not splashing all over your feet! Definitely a two-person job.

It was rustic, but the memories of learning how to put a worm on a hook while fishing with Dad,

My father catches a Pike from the St. Lawrence River

My sister catches a trout on Fishhawk Lake

or being taught how to swim,

On the beach at Fishhawk Lake

start and run an outboard motorboat and get up on waterskis for the first time were small examples of the makings of lifetime memories that we shared as a family living on the water of the St. Lawrence in the summers. Sharing these simple summer routines made us feel closer as a family.

As an adult, I wanted to recapture those timeless memories. The yearning for an escape that was befitting of my childhood was hard to find, but never off my dream list.

Then I discovered Fishhawk Lake ten years ago. It had the same sweet woodsy smell that took me immediately back to the times I spent as a kid wandering along the well-worn paths both near the water as well as the meandering ones in the woods that took us to the other side of the island. The sounds traveling across from the other side of Fishhawk Lake reminded me of how well you can hear on water—everything from a dog barking to childish laughter while splashing around in the water a quarter of a mile away—a lesson I learned early on as to how sounds can be heard more easily across water than land.

There was the appreciation for a simpler life. People who all waved at each other, whether you knew them or not. Helping out a neighbor who might need a tool that wasn’t in their own array of fix-it items. Playing games—such a big deal in a small community—gathering people together to laugh over cards or horseshoes, and always ALWAYS friendly.

Bunco Night at Fishhawk Lake

These are some of the similarities I have found at Fishhawk Lake.

Many people that I do business with in real estate who find their way here to Fishhawk Lake are trying to recapture those same or similar memories for themselves to share with their children, their relatives, their friends.

Not everyone seeks this simplicity--this way back to a memory of endless summers filled with genuine joy of living and playing on water in a small community. It is something that they may not readily be able to describe to me, but something that I completely understand.  It is a way to get back to the basic calm in life. To sit by water and take it IN.

To hear the sounds it makes, to smell the delicious CLEAN of fresh air and fresh water…it is pristine, untouched, basic.

Many of us want to go back to our easy breezy childhoods when time seemed like FOREVER and you got to enjoy a summer without complication, and simply being a kid was easy to do.

As Labor Day came and went it gave me a moment to reflect on those endless summers and took me back to a time when you looked forward to going back to school, reconnecting with friends and sharing delicious moments of what you did on your summer vacation.

Gayle, my grandparents had a farm up in Michigan that was the "family homestead" for years. It was right on a small lake, which was wonderful for fishing in the summer (remind me to tell you the story about a skinny 9-year-old kid and a very strong carp sometime) and sliding on the foot-thick frozen ice in winter. Those kind of memories still inspire both my love of the country and my love of lakeside retreats to this day - and it seems like you have found one of the best ones around!

About the power of smell to invoke memories - my brother and I were hiking about 9,000 feet up in the Colorado Rockies a couple of years ago. We were going along a wooded trail towards a lake on the map. We got close, and this smell blew to us on a breeze. It was the smell of our grandparent's lake. We stopped and looked at each other - it was as if we had both been simultaneously been transported back in time. We hurried through the last few trees, and there it was: a glorious little lake...filled with water lilies, just as our grandparent's lake had always been. That was what we smelled. A world away from Michigan, almost two miles up in the mountains, we were suddenly home again.

Gayle-It is so fun listening to you talk about the 1000 Islands because I know the area well and lived with 20-30 minutes from there and have taken many boat rides there. I also had to smile at the priming of the pump for water. We had one of those when I was a kid growing up so I am very familar with doing that. Kids nowadays don't have a clue. Thanks for the trip down your memory lane which evoked memories for me as well.

Hi Gayle, No wonder you turned out so well. If I could grant a wish to every child of the current generations, it would be to live a portion of one of your wonderful summers. Our whole country would be better for it.

Steve, just so you know, one of your blogs recently spurned me onto writing this piece. You were talking about the change of seasons and it made me feel nostalgic (a word I love and didn't manage to get into this writing). Thank you for your inspiration.

Roger, ironically, it turns out that you aren't far from my sister!  I sent this  post off to her and when she read your comment, I guess she noticed where you're located. Small world!

Roy, that is a gorgeous butterfly photo..I love butterflies and they also remind me of my summers and excellent and happy memories. Dragonflies, too!

Mona~my dad was the BEST. As beautiful inside as he was on the outside. Thanks for saying that about him--he was and still is my hero.

Sheila, those who truly understand and grasp this have found the secret. I believe yours is coming, is it not?  or already there?

Ed--I LOVE that kind of reaction! Thank you!

Kristin, isn't it delightful to read something that takes you back to a time in your life that was just plain HAPPY? I sure hope that someday you get to plant yourself HERE, if for only a day or two--you would love it!

Charlie, I'm glad you liked it--it was easy to write.

Ellie, loved your comment and nice to see you, too....

Michael, then you get what I'm saying.

QMan~I feel blessed, because it has been somewhat of a fairy tale for me.

Mike~I have SO many great summer photos, and pictures of genuine joy out here that it was hard to pick just a few.

Mary Elizabeth~what you wrote totally captures the same feeling that I wanted to evoke in my piece...I absolutely LOVED this and wish that you would expound on it sometime and then send me a link to it. And thank you for the gorgeous photo to accompany it. Kindred spirits!

Richie~you are a man after my own heart. We need to clone people like you. We would have no wars.

Debb~I am deeply thankful to my mom and her many generations that preceded her, because it allowed us the chance to grow up having very precious memories that have profoundly affected me. (I have one more day til vacation and a busy real-estate filled one..all good).

Gretchen, thank you for enjoying my photos...I can't take credit for the top one, I found it in an array of Thousand Island photos (I didn't have time to paw through all my old stuff to try and come up with more than that very old picture I put in here of our old boathouse).

Bernice, it IS bittersweet, isn't it? But, living here fulltime, it doesn't end after Labor Day, just gets more peaceful.

Kris, I am counting the days til you get to experience Fishhawk Lake yourself. It will be a precious time for all of us! and you are SO right about my dad and finding Fishhawk Lake. I knew it was divine intervention that brought us here. It has been a GodSend.

Tammy, sharing these memories for generations is SO important. I got to spend these with not only my grandmother, but my Great Grandparents as well--truly lifechanging.

Sharon, you and I can truly say we "know each other" with the close-to-home shared memories of the 1000 Islands--and I was THRILLED to find out where you lived because I knew that place from my childhood and it brought us together like sisters!

Tony, what I haven't mentioned is that Mom still has a cottage there and she drives from FLA to it every year and stays there for the whole summer season and into fall. It's much nicer now!

Alexandra, one can only hope that kids get to experience that genuine joy that you and I have in our memorybank. It is priceless.

William, I couldn't agree more and thank you for such a lovely sentiment...you are a kind man.

Gayle - Yes, I am thinking that since I don't have any vacations planned in the near future, I will take a "virtual vacation" back to Colorado and make it the subject of a blog post! Isn't that little lake (it's called Cub Lake) just the most beautiful place? Thanks for the nudge on the blog post idea!

Oh, and I don't know HOW I forgot Trader Joe's on my other list - it's also my favorite store! I don't know how I lived without it before I knew about it :-D

Discovered your blogs from Kristine's feature and am now a subscriber. The word "enchanted" comes to mind when seeing the absolutely stunning photos and experiences you've captured on film. I too miss the days of inter tubing down creeks and those endless summers and beating my brother with how many fish were caught for the day. :)

oh and the "flower girls" are adorable.

I saw this on Facebook and had to stop over and read it again. It shows what a small world it is sometimes because here we were so close in distance as a kid and now all these years later we connect again. Hope your day has been fun
