Nazareth, PA is home to C.F. Martin & Co., which is celebrating it's 175th Anniversary this year.  It is the oldest surviving producer of guitars in the world and currently the largest manufacturer of acoustic guitars in the United States.  The company is known for making some of the finest, quality instruments, and introducing standards in the music products industry.  C.F. Martin & Co. was started by German immigrant Christian Frederick Martin, Sr. in 1833 and was founded in the U.S.  It has been family owned and operated for 6 generations.

The company will kick off it's year long celebration in honor of the acoustic guitar, which has been played in all types of music, from classical and country, to blues, folk and acoustic rock.  Special events will include an auction of exquisite Martin prototypes to benefit the Martin Foundation in late 2008.  In addition, the company will introduce a line of limited edition guitars, publication of several books, a CD featuring performances of Martin artists, an in-depth online photo gallery showing the company's history, as well as the copmany's accomplishments and cultural contributions throughout the world during the last 175 years.

C.F. Martin & Co. has survived many economic, social and political events, such as the Civil War, post war turmoil, immigration, World War I, the "Roaring 20's", the Great Depression, World War II, the Vietnam War and the technological revolution.  Not only did it survive through it all, it also improved and increased.  Recently, Martin has set company sales records even with the down economy.  It has crafted it's millionth acoustic guitar, has undergone renovation and expansion of the factory, plus, it unveiled a new museum and visitor's center in Nazareth, PA.

Over the years, Martin started producing mandolins in the late 1800's, and becoming the top producer of ukuleles in the 1920's.  In 1970, Martin acquired Darco String Company and are also now producing quality guitar strings.

Christian, better known as Chris, Frederick Martin IV took over the company in 1986 and is the current Chairman and CEO.  Under his leadership, he has increased sales and production, maintained the level of quality, introduced new technologies and expanded the factory to nearly 3 times its prior size.  He has also introduced many affordable guitars.

If you are ever in the area of Nazareth, PA, be sure to stop and visit the museum and take a tour of the factory.  You will be totally amazed at the craftsmanship that goes into manufacturing a guitar.

I am sure for a musician this is very interesting but I am on here for Real Estate purposes not musical reasons.

I plan on buying a Martin this year, and never selling it.  They are absolutely great guitars that get better with age.

A town without music is a town without a soul! The name, Martin, synonymous with "quality." We have Gibson crafting guitars in our area.

Mohamend:

Yes, this is a Real Estate site, but part of Real Estate is informing the consumer about the area.  If they are considering the area, they would like to know as much about it as possible.  I have had numerous buyers ask me about the area.  Haven't you ever been intereseted in knowing what's going on in your neighborhood?

Clint:

I have taken the tour through the factory and all the guitars are hand made.  It's really quite neat seeing the different steps it takes to produce a guitar.

Here, here!  Martin definitely makes quality guitars.  Gibsons are good electric guitars.  Know the name from back in the seventies.  It was big then.

BLR Guy:

Mohamed's comment didn't bother me.  It's just frustrating that we have such negative agents out there.  If he wasn't interested in the post, he should have just moved on.  We should have more agents that are positive, like us.  :-)

Thanks for your support.  You know me, they'll keep on coming!

Hey Mohamed,

There is SO much here on Active Rain... so many diverse groups... so many different topics... yes... even real estate topics!!!  So why do you feel the need to make a comment like that?  Are you going to go to EVERY post that isn't about real estate and make that same comment?

If you are here for 'Real Estate purposes' then go find posts about real estate and leave everyone else alone.  BLR.... let me borrow that for a moment.... CLUNK!!!!!

Sheesh!!!

This is an interesting post..

and yes it's real estate oriented..

and a good LOCALISM one as well...

Most of us want to know about the areas we are considering (or not presently- because someday if we get enough good info, we just might be later on..... even if  only just to visit..)

Active Rain is more than just the same old same ole  just like the real estate industry which like its customers are expanding beyond yesterdays knowledge and techniques...

Keep making AR worth returning to again and again.. with fresh posts on new topics...

I bought my Martin D-35 in 1975. I worked and saved a whole summers' wages when I was 16. I wouldn't sell for any amount of money. I'd love to visit the factory one day.  Vicki

Thank you, Martin!

Mohamed needed that!  LOL

Glad you enjoyed the post!  It's nice hearing about things from where you used to live.  At least I think so.

Vicki:

Martin guitars are quality guitars, hand made and built to last.  If you take care of them, they will last you a lifetime and then some.  This is why they cost a pretty penny.  Hope you are still enjoying it.

If you do ever come up, give me a holler and we'll both make the tour.  Haven't been in the factory since about 15 years ago.

BRIGITA - I had no idea where these guitars came from, or the fact that the company has been around for so long.  This was an interesting look at a piece of music history.

Brigita,

It's funny.  I go back to comments I made to see what the response was.  Sometimes.... there are so many comments that it's just easier to search for 'Martin' on the page to find my comments/responses.  That didn't work so well on this post!

The best thing to do would be to check off the box that says notify me of new comments.  Then you wouldn't have to go through the search.  You can always unsubscribe from it at any time.  Hope this helps.

I'm a fan of Martin Guitars. And if a guitar company with that longevity was based out of my home town I'd be talking it up too!  That's a huge deal for an American company to remain strong for so long!  And there's a sense of heritage and nostialgia that comes with it (and the town).  Way to go Martin!  My company, Ticor Title NW has been in our state since 1883 and we're proud of it.

Thanks for sharing, Brigita

Matt:

Martin Guitar is a great company to work for.  I know of a few employees at Martin and they have been there for a long time.  This is part of the reason why the company has been here for such a long time.  The employees love working there and the company takes good care of them.

I grew up in east Tennesee in a home that was filled with music.  It wasn't unusual for 8 or10 to gather on a weekend and play until the wee hours in the morning.  My father who passed away in December left me his Martin guitar in his will.  He received many hours of pleasure from his youth until he passed away at 87.

Joi:

My deepest sympathy on the passing of your father.

Martin guitar is a good quality guitar.  I have toured their factory and saw how well these guitars are made.  Each one of them are hand made, including the strings.  The employees take pride in their work and it shows.

Enjoy the guitar!  :-)
