Hearty, Homey Mexican Food at Rosa's Mexican Restaurant - Tucson AZ
Sometime around the second week of June 2000, I was introduced to Rosa's Mexican Food. Fairly new to authentic Mexican fare, I have to admit I was pretty taken, pretty immediately!
I still remember the first thing I ordered: Ala Cart, Avocado Enchiladas. Wow. I was excited about the avocados, but the enchilada sauce has had me going back for over 12 years now. Wow. Wow. Wow.
Rosa's has been family owned by the Ortega family and has been in operation over 35 years. Obviously, I'm not the only one a fan of their red sauce.
The place has seen a few updates and changes over the years and in my last visit I noticed more seating, and even more Mexican flavor in the murals, decor, and atmosphere.
I have to say their service has really improved over the years as well, as I recall long waits and messed up orders now seem to be a thing of the past.
We always decided taste won out over any minor inconveniences, however, and it's a place we return to again and again.
If you're looking for a charming place for breakfast lunch or dinner, with real down-home, family style, I recommend Rosa's loud, inviting atmosphere.
It isn't what I'd call gourmet Mexican, but the combination plates and specials seem to please everyone, because it's rare that the place isn't packed on even a weekday evening.
And, don't be concerned if there's 20 people waiting outside...the wait always moves along quickly. I don't think I've ever waited more than 15 minutes for a table in all my years.
They also offer carry out (but not, I think, on busy nights), and cater for special events.
If you haven't found Rosa's Mexican Food tucked in along the back of a strip mall on the Southwest corner of Campbell and Ft. Lowell, I encourage you to take a little trip.
The red sauce, or the green sauce for that matter, will have you coming back for more.
