Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #37

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-09-07/news/os-fatal-hit-and-run-pedestrian-crash-20120907_1_troopers-westbound-lanes-colonial-drive

The driver who killed this pedestrian remains at large as of the last news report I heard.  While the pedestrian was wrong for being in the street, this driver who failed to stop/render aid/wait on police to arrive must now be held accountable for not doing so.

Anyone with any information, please call the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) at the number below.

Troopers looking for vehicle in fatal hit-and-run

By Arelis R. Hernández, Orlando Sentinel

Troopers are looking for a light-colored, four-door sedan suspected of striking and killing a pedestrian near the intersection of west Colonial Drive and North Powers Drive, officials said.

The wreck occurred about 4:16 a.m. and shut down the westbound lanes of Colonial Drive where Florida Highway Patrol vehicles blocked the road during the investigation.

Troopers have not identified the victim but describe him as white middle-aged man.

The suspected vehicle fled the scene after striking the victim while traveling westbound in the center lane approaching Powers Drive. It was last scene heading westbound.

Charges are pending, said FHP spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes.

Anyone with information is asked to call troopers at 407-737-2213.

Another typical sad story.  Bad neighborhood, middle of the night, crossing 8 lanes of traffic.  People never learn.

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Funny thing about these stories is that 1) they're not funny, 2) they're getting less and less sad for me.  I don't think it's that I'm getting more callous as times goes by, but I do think I'm getting sick and tired of:

1) folks walking/running/pushing their kids and strollers right out into the middle of the street in front of me

2) the fact that our friendly local news media (including guys like Dan Tracy that I speak with a good bit) refuses to place any blame on these outside-the-crosswalk pedestrians.  Don't know if it's happened to any of them, but I'd figure that being a 19-year-old driving along and trying to swerve to avoid these folks before killing one would stink.

In my humble opinion, strolling into the street where you're not supposed to be and getting killed is just a crappy thing to do to your family as well.

It's also way past frustrating to see folks push a kid in a stroller right out into traffic in front of an Orange County Sheriff's deputy- only to see the deputy motor on past as if the folks had done nothing wrong.

By the way, I've considered terminating my series here on a couple of occasions- for the subject matter isn't the sunniest, though my goal truly is to prevent some of these if at all possible.  But you know something?  I can write about market reports, repair issues, showings, etc- but this series is at the top of my most-viewed posts I've ever written...

Plenty of blame to go around for these.  I see more and more articles about distracted drivers but also about distracted pedestrians.  I remember about a year ago after leaving ORRA one morning and pulling out on Edgewater Drive.  There was some typical thug looking lady jaywalking across the street.  Stepped right in front of my car off the curb while carrying a baby in one hand and talking on a cell phone in another.  When I slammed on my brakes and my horn, the lady jumped back on the curb and gave me a middle finger.

I feel bad for the baby but not for the mom.

Hi, Rob:  No less than 5 folks came close to finding their way under my van yesterday- in a short span of 436 between Winter Park and I-4. Anyone that's driven along John Young, Colonial, OBT, 436...especially out towards Curry Ford, Kirkman, Curry Ford itself, Powers, Pine Hills Road or Hiawassee once or twice has seen the same thing.  It's amazing how quiet the voices like mine calling for an end to this kind of foolishness are.  Wait a second..I'm atually THE voice- and that's amazingly pitiful.
