US Sand Sculpture Competition
San Diego " B" Street Pier

During the Festival of Sail at the San Diego Embarcadero this past Labor Day weekend, another event was going on just two blocks away. The Annual US Sand Sculpture Competition among 10 of the worlds finest sand sculptors. What makes this competition so unusual is that instead of being held at Imperial Beach in South county, it was moved up to San Diego and to make it all the more unusual, it was not held at a beach. 300 tons of sand was dredged and dumped on the "B" street pier and from that, the sand was allotted and the artists began in earnest creating their individual masterpieces. The price money for this competition was in the range of $60,000 and last years 1st and 2nd place winners we here to see if back to back wins was a possibility.

Here are some of the entries this year. I think you will agree that some of these have details that are rather remarkable.

Obviously I need to up my sand castle skills.  These are true works of art and to bad they will end up being washed away by the sea.

William - I have seen sand sculpture, but NOTHING of this astonishing quality.  It's one thing to paint a picture.  It's another to sculpt it in stone.  But to have three dimensional art created out of nothing more than shifting sand is amazing!

OMG!  These are stunningly spectacular works of art ... and as a home stager and decorator, I can say I've never seen a sand "castle" so nicely staged ... multiple levels, too!  Thanks for the great photos.

I am always amazed of how talented some people are that do this...I never got past upside down buckets dumped and plastic shovels digging a little riverbank....Sad too that after all that effort, the wind, the rain and the sun claims it all in the end

Absolutely amazing! It's just such a shame, they can't be preserved forever. I just can't imagine having that kind of talent. Thanks for sharing.
