HGTV Green Home to become Smart Home & build in Jacksonville Beach
For the last several years, HGTV has built and given away its HGTV Green Home. The Green Home was built with sustainability in mind. The giveaway of the last HGTV Green Home was just this past summer to the lucky Jones family. The home was 2200 sqft, located in Serenbe, an eco-progressive community in Geogia's Chattahoochee Hills and included an additional $100,000 and 2012 GMC Terrain.
On August 14, 2012, HGTV Announced that the 2013 HGTV Green Home would become the HGTV Smart Home and the giveaway would happen in our own backyard, Jacksonville Beach, FL. The new 2400 sqft home will be built in Paradise Key South Beach, designed by architect Mike Stauffer AIA, and built by Glenn Layton Homes. One of the most visually dramatic element will no doubt be the 1000+ sqft of covered porches, decks and a pool.
While sustainability is not the top focus of the new HGTV home giveaway, Paradise Key South Beach, is a great compliment to the green approach. Using local labor and materials, Paradise Key focuses on ways to use indigenous plants and landscaping to reduce the need for watering, fertilizer and other resources. Instead, a low maintenance coastal lifestyle has been created with wooden walking bridges and footpaths throughout the community. Only five blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, bicycling and walking also becomes part of the coastal lifestyle.
