What does Dioxane Contamination in Groundwater Supply mean?

I recently came across an article in the Eagle Tribune in regards to a substantial amount of contaminations presenting it self in wells in Atkinson, NH reference the link below if you would like to read full article. When I came across this article I am not sure if I was more shocked about at how present this contaminant is or that I had no clue what it was.

I pride myself in being a water professional and I have to say it blew my mind that I had no reference or knowledge of this particular element. This article is a little something I put together in regards to Dioxane but please bear with me as im still learning about this particular one.

1,4 Dioxane is often called straight Dioxane. This element is a heterocyclic organic compound. It’s colorless, presents itself as a faint sweet odor and is tasteless. Dioxane is considered to be an ether. Its primary function is used as a stabilizer or solvent under industrial applications. Exposure can be work related or this contaminant can be found in the groundwater supply. An exposure action level standard seems to be 3 parts per billion.

Dioxane has many health hazards and symptoms. Dioxane is irritating to the eyes and the repertory tract. Exposure can lead to central nervous system, liver and kidney damage. The EPA has classified Dioxane as a probable human carcinogen. Some signs and symptoms that you may have been affected by dioxane would be upper respiratory issues, coughing, iteration to eyes and skin, drowsiness, vertigo, headaches, stomach aches and nausea among many others for more information please refer to the links below.

Please keep an eye for our upcoming blog of how to filter Dioxane out of ground water supplies.

I was recently contacted by Thomas Mohr of Mohr Hydro Geoscience. Thomas is an industry leader in Dioxane and treatment options I was privileged to have the honor of him contacting me and referring me to a wealth of information regarding dioxane. I strongly urge you to read his publication at the link below. Thomas ensured me that the NHDEP and Connecticut, Mass DEP have been paying attention to this issue and are working with EPA to find solutions to this groundwater contaminant. Thank you Tom!  I truly appreciate your time and guidance regarding this matter.
