"Business is the salt of life."

Voltaire (1694 - 1778)

Voltaire was a civil libertarian.  He was in favor of freedom and advocated things like freedom of religion, freedom of personal expression, international free trade and, of all things, state politics free from the politics of the church!

What?  Separation of church and state?  And individual freedoms?

So what did he mean when he said business?  Busy ness?  Yes, in a way.

What is business?  When I studied economics in college I, smartly, had a business and economics dictionary!  Here is a good definition of business:

"An economic system in which goods and services are exchanged for one another or money, on the basis of their perceived worth. Every business requires some form of investment and a sufficient number of customers to whom its output can be sold at profit on a consistent basis."  (This is from businessdictionary.com)

There are some key concepts there, with some implied:

1.  Voluntary exchange
2.  Perceived worth
3.  Risk (investment)
4.  A product or service that people want
5.  CONSISTENT profit

Without the last, the business will fail.  Certainly the object of business is to profit.  It's purpose is not to provide social opportunity, employee benefits, back political causes, fund clubs and teams, free give-a-ways, a Christmas party for everyone in Hawaii, or anything like that.  The business owner(s) can CHOOSE to do all of those things and more.  But they can only be done with profits!

But what does Voltaire mean identifying business with salt?

What is salt?  Certainly one of the tastes built into the human ability to distinguish taste, so it works great for seasoning food.  But salt is also used in preservation!

In Roman society, the gubment (the army) sometimes paid soldiers in salt.  The soldiers traded it in the market place for what they needed.  Hence the word SALary.  And Romans were fond of eating leafy vegetables seasoned with salt, and they called it a SALad, literally meaning "salted."

Looking at the list of five things up there associated with the definition of business might give a clue as to what Voltaire understood.  Business promotes freedom!  Business provides seasoning to the society!  Business PRESERVES those freedoms and that society as standards of living are improved through the introduction of goods, services and innovation!

Recently I heard interviews with people who were attending a particular convention.  They were asked about business profits and if those profits should be made illegal.  Yes, of course, profits should be outlawed they said!

These are people who clearly have no idea how an economy works.  They have no idea how a society (civilization really) is organized and maintained.  These are people who have never employed anyone and if they ever do it won't be for long.  These are people whose ideas, and the kind of society they promote, will end up in the trash bin of history.  These people are morons.

And if you vote for people like them we will all end up getting dragged down into the trash bin of history...

Vote smart.

There is a huge moron vote Lisa.  The subject of my free enterprise blog a couple of weeks ago!  One party in particular counts on those morons.

So, Wallace, he sat below where people were throwing salt over their shoulders?

Debbie - I don't know about that!  Don't you think he would quickly find a job if he knew he was going to pay for his entitlements with public service or tax money?

Good morning Jay. As always you have gave me something to ponder today. I also believe there should be no free rides. Public service for public assistance sounds like a plan. Vote smart and spread the word!

Then, Randy, what do we do about the public service of society donating $49K to produce a car that costs $40K (AFTER the other societal $7500 tax credit donation)?

Who thinks up crap like that?  Oh, the same people who thought up Cash for Clunkers, which cost us, what, $58K per car turned in?

Jay:  I own a small business and was raised by a savvy single mom who, oh, got laid off from United AL in mid-semester and we had to go on food stamps for ONLY six months.  Poverty breeds crime and the 15 percent who abuse public services are not a reason to screw the 85% who get back on their feet.  Still paying for my two degrees that I EARNED.  You're a brilliant writer and love your historical references and quotes.  However, even the Romans fed their poor, slaves nothwithstanding.  I've enjoyed your blogs, but this is not the forum for politics, especially when we disagree on who should be / remain in the White House.  All the best, but have to unsubscribe my fellow Virginian.  See ya' at the polls...

Hillary - I do this blog every week!  I only post it on the political forums!  Of course economics is political!  So few understand economics because they have never had a course!

I do these blogs off the top of my head.  Last night I knew what quote I was going to use today, but had no idea what I would write until I began writing this morning!  Did you learn anything new?

If poverty breeds crime the depression would have been the most crime-ridden era.  It was a popular gangster era, but they did not last long and they represented few people.

As to Romans feeding slaves, I am Hungarian.  I am a slav.  The word slave came from the Romans who took my slav ancestors back for servancy, because Hungarians made the best "slaves."

I am the first person in my polling place, Victory Lakes Elementary, every election.  Doubtful you will see me!

Subscribing and unsubscribing is up to you!  But I'd stay on if I was you - you might learn things you don't know!  If you disagree with me, convert me to your position!  Having attended about 10 years of post-grad school, since college, and also paying for it myself, I am open to learning!

Well said, Jay.  I think Voltaire was on to something.  It's a little scary when you read a comment like Debbie's #7.  I'm convinced that if we depend on the government for our support we will ultimately be left with no support, but we will have a government that we cannot control.

Mike - I think the old adage I learned in my econ classes still rings true - if you want more of something, subsidize it.  If you want less, tax it.  If we are going to subsidize people for 99 weeks to, as the recent change was made, NOT WORK, will they work more or less?

Personally I think having people are temporarily not able to produce perform public service for receiving abundance from other people (the PUBLIC) who are producing is utterly fair trade.  And that is a form of tax, which, ultimately, will create less non-productivity and provide incentive to work again.

Obviously the track we are on is unsustainable.  So, when do we change?

Morning Jay he was a truly wise man.  I know I will vote if I'm still above ground.  The wife and I do not talk politics or religion as to our different views.  I did however change her mind as to who she is going to vote for in this election YEA!!!

As you say, salt was a preservative and a spice so those sitting belor the salt did not get any salt and usually got lesser quality of food.

So, Wallace, you are saying that in society people should not sit below business?     ;>)     And those would be the non-producers?

Jay - Peter Schiff interviewing the delegates about banning profits was funny. Keep in mind, these people were delegates, so they are more politically awake and involved than the average person! I follow Peter Schiff and have learned a lot from him. His father is an awesome guy. He was the one who woke me up the the possibility that the 16th Amendment was not properly ratified.

When I watch the left or progressive news programs, their issue is with workers making low wages while the CEOs make multi-million dollar incomes. In other words, their issue is with the wage disparity between workers and CEOs. My take is that a true free market determines wages for a particular skill set.

Involved maybe, but not awake Satar.  The word "equal" is thrown around without understanding, kind of like the word "right."

One is paid financially in life based on how difficult one is to replace.  Who is typically the highest paid player on an NFL team?  The hardest to replace.  Why is the guy in the park sticking trash on a nail at the end of a pole paid less than, say, a dentist?  Easy peasy, to sane people, even children.  These "delegates" would have them paid the same.

Morons all.
