On January 1st when I sat in my office waiting to run the Frosty 5k in Guilford my thoughts of a running goal for the year was not well defined.  At the end of my first year running I did a 5 miles, my second year's goal was completion of a half marathon and at the beginning of my third year a full 26.2 mile marathon seemed huge. Initially my idea was to call it a plateau year and just stick to my 5k events and try another half hoping to improve my time.

One of the first pieces of mail I received in 2008 was from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society inviting me to learn more about their Team in Training and I noticed the Fairfield Half Marathon that I thought I would run for the second time was an event in which they were involved so I attended the meeting.

Learning that Team in Training provides the largest fundraising for the society and this is their 20th Anniversary with an event scheduled shortly after my 50th Birthday I decided 2008 was the year of my marathon fate.  This spring I will build my endurance to complete the 26.2 mile Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego. 

In additon to many many training miles before the event I need to raise a bit of cash. The Team in Training along with help from Active.com povides any easy and secure method of making CONTRIBUTIONS.

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission.  Your contribution regardless of size provides me the encouragement needed to reach the finish line and gives researchers the financial backing to find a cure.

Dan, My husband ran the San Diego Rock and Roll marathon in 2005. He ran and I shopped!!!! :0)

Maybe I'll talk my husband into running again so I can have a shopping partner this time. Are you in Sandra? :0)

Thesa... I'll try to stick with the elite runners in the lead so keep yourself glued to the TV... LOL

Thanks, you can click the link and make donations on-line with a credit card also if its easier.  I don't need spandex to scare children and didn't even give the evil eye to a little girl at the Outback last week as she walked by our table with her squeaky shoes for the tenth time... Once was cute, twice was fine but after 15 minutes it was a bit much.

Elizabeth.... My shorts are always decent length but sometimes a camera catches me without them when I'm changing after a race!

Way to go Dan!  I plan to do the Arizona Distance Classic half in March, and the Phoenix Rock N Roll full marathon (my first) in January.  Of course, this is all dependant on the outcome of my visit to the orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday.  Possible torn meniscus.  My future may be in race-walking or bodybuilding!

Dawn... Didn't realize you building towards a half so quickly... Thought your knee was giving you enough trouble at short distances.  Race walkers can move right along.. My first event was a 2 mile walk where I managed a pace of 11:12 and was feeling good.  A few weeks later I did my first 5K "running" and finished with a pace of 11:11!  Yes, only 1 second per mile faster but hobbled around in pain for a week...

George.... Is the cards security code an unusual request?  Since I have been dealing with on-line purchases for years without any problems I never worry but will email you now.  The amount of each donation is not important, whether it takes 200 people giving an average or $25 each or 2000 offering $2.50 each the end result is the same financially but the smaller donations mean I have reached more people and made them aware of how close medical research is to finding a cure and helping thousands of families.

Dan I was told to never give out those three digits especially over the net.  I also make purchases over the net with my credit card, but they never ask for those three digits, so I do not know why they are asking for them with a donation.

George... I always thought that 3 or 4 digit code was to prove you had the card when doing on-line or phone purchases where the vendor is unable to make the imprint or now-a-days swipe the card.

Elaine...  The run starts at 6:30 am Sunday June 1.  The more I look at details the harder it sounds but suppose after 4 months of training I'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Tom... It's actually fun and challenging.  Some people take it way to serious and kill themselves racing the clock. I'm fine at my slower pace and even carry a camera to stop and take photos along the way.  The elite runners will finish a few hours ahead of me and there will be people coming in a few hours after me.

Ginger.... The Rock-n-Roll Marathon in San Diego is their biggest single fund raiser so I figured I'd shoot for the top!

Michael... I never understood the attraction years ago and never did cardio at the gym but once I started running I enjoyed it. Nice to put on the ipod and head out in the fresh are for some quiet time.

 Dan, great post.  I appreciate all of your hard work to run, raise money for this most important cause.  My wife is also apart of the Fayetteville, NC Chapter.  It is amazing to see peoples lives being change through this organization.

Marvin... It does seem like a great group of people managing the program and raises much needed research money.  I still need to perfect my fund-raising techniques because my response rate is not as high as I anticipated and I cannot keep up my current mailing pace with postage being so expensive.  I was surprised most people that donate send a check instead of going on line.

Dan, I am a big fan of TNT and would love to support it as well.  Will you send me an email with your address an I will get a check in the mail as well.  I did a half ironman with them a few years back and it was a blast.
