The Fiscal Cliff - What is It?

By
Real Estate Agent

A few months ago, I listened as a young teenager stood near me in the grocery checkout line and asked her dad, “What is the ‘fiscal cliff’ anyway . . . I thought we approached the cliff in autumn of 2008,” she said.

I remember quietly thinking it a really good question.  I was curious about factors that would trigger into play, should a fiscal cliff come into play as a result of our dysfunctional Congress not acting in a responsible way.

This morning I learned CBS News Money Watch posted a report by Jill Schlesinger titled, “What is the Fiscal Cliff?”   This Q&A answers some of the more critical points of how much continued inaction by Congress will affect your taxes.  In addition the article answers the following.

  • Where will the spending cuts occur?
  • Will Medicare be cut?
  • What programs will NOT be cut?
  • How would the fiscal cliff affect the economy?
  • How would the fiscal cliff affect the deficit?
  • What if Congress delays the fiscal cliff?
  • Where do the parties stand?

The article addresses whether Congress is likely to act and avoid the January 1st deadline for avoiding the cliff.  It was interesting and informative.  For those interested in numbers and facts surrounding this important topic  The article can be accessed via: “What is the Fiscal Cliff?”

One thing for certain, we need Congress to put COUNTRY FIRST, and their special interest funded political parties last!

i have never heard the expression "fiscal cliff" before. It doesn't sound like something I'd be looking forward to though.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

The Fiscal Cliff is an imaginary consequence of Congressional ineptness that will never occur.  We will approach the crisis, but the majority of the do-nothing club are smart enough to know that they will fall off that cliff, and fall harder than any other citizens.  In the days that follow the election, the principle charade will briefly end, and practicality will prevail.

Hi Myrl, An interesting topic that may not get peoples serious attention until the election has been decided by other than the pollsters. Both sides of the isle are standing firm and the one that winces first is the loser ( at least in their minds). What a way to run our country.

Fernando - I think it is fairly certain that Congress will continue to do nothing until after the election at least.

Malcolm - You may be more familiar with another term associated with the "fiscal cliff" - "sequestration."  I think one reason the men in Congress may be avoiding that term is because "sequestration" sounds frighteningly similar to "castration". . .LOL

MIke - I highly doubt that Congress will do anything about this until after the election.  The question is how will Congress ultimately handle the crisis?  Will they (1) Continue to do nothing? (2) Push out the deadline? (3) Increase the Debt Limit? (4) Work in cooperation for a balanced approach to a workable solution?  I hate being a pessimist, but having watched the dysfunction of Congress in recent years, I think there is a snow ball's chance in hell for #4.  I would put most of my bet on numbers 2 and 3.  After the election, I do believe they will discontinue #1.

William - There is a lot of special interest money contributing to the "do nothing" attitude in Congress.  I continue to ask, "How's that working for us?"  I once thought our country was run by statesmen.  Unfortunately, I think they have turned into rodeo clowns for special interests.  I would love an open dialogue of ideas, which may be productive to problem solving.

I am with Mike in comment #3.  It was get resolved, but only because it affects lawmakers too.  They are, above all else, self-interested.

Myrl,

First of all thank you for this great information.  I had not heard this term before, and it sounds ominous with the word "cliff", and I am wondering which self interests will win out, and contribute to the blame game.  Like William said, "what a way to run a country!".  Wouldn't it be nice, if we all resolved to work together instead of creating rifts?  A

Our do nothing Congress appears to want to push all of us over the fiscal cliff.

I sure wish there were term limits that would require some new faces.

Elizabeth - I think it has nearly impossible for them to put country first.  There's far to much special interest money influencing the parties.  In some instances parties aren't providing campaign support and funding, for those who don't toe the party agenda!

Chris Ann - The problem is that it never affects them.  They are provided quality lifetime health care, even if they serve one term.  They can vote in their own pay raises.  Their campaign calls are exempt from the "Do Not Call List."  They dwell in an alternative universe.

Alexandra - All I know is that always just saying, "NO," isn't an answer to our problems.  That's obstructionism.  I wish for cooperation, but it is through polarization that the parties are able to pander to special interests.  Unfortunately, only the lunatic fringes are having their needs addressed!

Roy - I use to think term limits would be a mixed blessing.  For example, we have had a few great statesmen in the past, who would have created a vacuum of leadership had we lost them at critical times.  However, they are a pretty rare breed in today's Congress!

Myrl ~ I'm still trying to get over the fact that Congress gets a 5 week vacation. How much bleaker does it have to get before voters wake up and vote out Congressional dead weight?

Myrl,

I completely agree with your comments but I personally think this group of folks in the Congress and Senate are absolutely dysfunctional and nothing productive will be done. Good blog and I will suggest.

Myrl - What we need to do is get term limits for all of Congress! The next thing is that their salary is reduced and that they get paid for actually being there and working. Oh, when they leave the job, all benefits STOP. They get regular health coverage and social security like the rest of the nation! Think of the money we could save! They act like they think they are royalty!
