How I got into Real Estate

I may have told this story before here on Active Rain but I couldn't find it so here it is....

I would love to say it was a plan, that I grew up wanting to be an agents (ok in High School at one point I thought it would be cool)but that is not my story.

Before Real Estate I was lost, I was stuck in doing something I hated and had no idea what I wanted to do. I made just enough money to where it was hard to leave but also hard to go to work each day. I felt trapped! Quite frankly, I didnt like it and I didnt put forth my best effort.

Then Wendy and I started dating, she was an agent and she worked really hard. She was great with people but had issues with technology, she needed an assistant but really couldn't afford one due to her financial position after a bitter divorce. So I started helping her with her websites and marketing as I enjoy web design and programming. Wendy had been in real estate for about a year when we started dating, since I had been in sales for 20 years she would ask me sales questions...  As time passed I found myself leaving my real job early to help her. I really enjoyed the web work. One day she suggested "why don't you get a Real Estate license?"  At first,I thought "NO! I just want to help out behind the scenes and be in my own little world!" But as time passed I started thinking about it, I signed up and started to study. I thought we could tag team and I could hold a house open for her on weekends, handle a little bit of the overflow of business when needed but keep my "job" until I found what I wanted to do.

Then it happened! I sold a home to a first time home buyer! I was hooked!

I can't express the feeling of joy and happiness I got in helping that couple! Then I helped someone whose home had been on and off the market several times. We had it sold in two months. The list keeps going! I can say as I near the end of my third year in the business I wish I did thisbefore.

Scott.. sometimes we don't really decide things, we just ease on into them. Me too for the Real Estate... it became a part of my life that evolved!

Great story Scott!  I don't know that anybody knew growing up that they were going to become a Realtor.  I enjoy reading other's stories about how they got into real estate.  Good stuff!

Scott, that is a great story! You guys have a winning team, wishing you much success.

I would also add, that the more I work and get to know other agents, the more amazed I am what wonderful people agents are. I am greatly inspired by professionalism and poise. I think seasoned real estate agents have the best people sklills, especially dealing with people who are stressed out in difficult situations, experience emotional breakdowns etc.

I love the ability to work as much or as little as we want. Being able to make my own schedule was very important to me.

Good post.

Get a couple of college degrees and begin teaching have five kids in 6 years then figure out that you need a second job, which ultimately becomes the prime job. Amen!
