With the economy in a lull, it seems to be the perfect time to learn the art of re-purposing. I love this particular topic because what is old can become new again. For example, if you have an abundance of throw pillows on your sofa but your sick of the color, style or plain sight of them, you can easily move them around the house to a new room or even re-cover them. Hey, its actually easier than you might think and it can be a whole lot cheaper than purchasing new ones. Lately, I heard from more than a few clients that they are sick of their rugs or looking for an update. Another client has a rug that she absolutely loves but a large portion of the corner was damaged beyond repair. That's when it hit me. Re-purposing what we already have could just solve the problem entirely.
If you do have a rug that has a significant amount of damage but you don't want to throw it away, think about having it cut down to a smaller size. Many times clients can not afford to have their rugs repaired if the damage is extensive. So why not just re-size it and re-purpose it in another room. Call a reputable carpet cleaner to get some references or to help you find a company that can cut and re-bind your rug. This is such a great way to keep an heirloom rug that is damaged or any rug that has some meaning of significance to you. The rug will be smaller but at least you will still have it and, again, its a great way to save some money.
Another option I really like is swapping rugs with someone else. Its not as crazy as it sounds. If you have a friend or relative that has a rug that's the size you need, you can always do a temporary swap. If that doesn't sound like your kind of deal, you can simply swap rugs with yourself. Take the rug from your living room and switch it with the rug from your dining room. Yup, its that easy. Re-purpose what you already have, pretty clever, right?
