Southeast Discovery asked Dale Hamlin, long time developer and creator of Carriage Park, a master-planned community located in Hendersonville, if he would share with our readers of Southern Way of Life, what he sees as the major attributes of this Western North Carolina town...and why he chose Hendersonville as the location for his North Carolina development project, over a decade ago.
Below are Dale Hamlin's comments about Hendersonville and Western North Carolina...
First and foremost, is the mild four season climate. It is a short sleeves and shorts spring, summer and autumn with few bugs on the alert. The air is clean and fresh and because of the elevation - 2100 ft to 3500 ft - the air movement is brisk, not stagnant and most of the breezes blow north to south.
Secondly, is the remarkably friendly yet sophisticated townspeople. Major services are excellent and close by. This small town boasts a full 72 piece symphony, the smallest town in the USA to do so. State Theatre has a playhouse in Flat Rock, a neighboring town just 3 miles away which boasts a year round venue.
Outdoor recreation opportunities rival those available in any city, with the exception of an ice skating facility. Many golf courses, and country clubs are also available. The 500,000-acre Pisgah National Forest surrounds this magnificent location. City parks, open-air concerts throughout the summer months, two darling parades each year - pour mounting evidence on the absolute peace and fulfillment the families of the area enjoy. The hidden charmer is the size of the town, it could really be called an upgraded and sophisticated Mayberry. And - with the Blue Ridge Community College and Wingate University in Hendersonville, the town is ever so vibrant.
“Second move in retirement” is an adage about what to do when the upkeep of a single residence in retirement may be more than one wishes to take care of in an advancing age. It is very important to understand this possibility, and the value of not having to plan to leave town. Hendersonville is blessed with a wide variety of such senior accommodations, meaning that social, religious, and entertainment options do not have to be forgone if a senior needs assisted-living at some point. Residents may need to move only a couple of miles away into the more caring environments of adult villages, thereby continuing their lifestyle of enjoying Hendersonville and all they have become accustomed to here. This is important to note because moving into assisted-living is a big step for a retiree to do at some point in their lives. Being able to reside in the same town, in this case Hendersonville, provides folks the ability to keep many attributes of their life the same. Attributes of daily life they have come to love and enjoy. In other words, a move to Hendersonville can and should be a permanent move with no reason to ever again need to relocate, which can be increasingly difficult as people age.
Two major population centers are within an hours drive. Greenville/Spartanburg, SC has a population of 1.2 million and is 45 minutes away. Asheville, NC has a population of 450,000 and is only 20 minutes from Hendersonville. Asheville's Regional Airport offers 45 daily flights and is just 15 minutes from Hendersonville. Greenville/Spartanburg's International Airport is also relatively close by, at 45 minutes distance.
I-26 a major US Interstate, is directed right through Hendersonville and its easy access allows a resident of Hendersonville to easily connect with other interstates (such as I-40 or I-85), thereby providing automobile access to anywhere in the United States.
Churches, synagogues, restaurants, hospitals, other intensive medical facilities, such as a modern oncology facility are readily convenient... Grocery stores including sumptuous high end specialized gourmet markets, and open-air farmers markets offering the freshest of fruits and vegetables are convenient to all residents of Hendersonville. And yes, Hendersonville does have its very own Mast General Store.
There is no problem with services living in Hendersonville as the town is large enough to offer a wide selection, small enough to provide customer care and a friendly shoulder to lean on.
Regional professional baseball is available in Asheville. There is a charter trolley to take residents and pick them up at the Asheville Field. High school sports in town provide wonderful and refreshing outlets for sports-minded folks and a sense of community. The Hendersonville library has consistently ranked as the #1 library in North Carolina for its size and is crawling with bright energetic folks enjoying the offerings.
Should a physical trauma occur, Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville is connected with Duke University and is one of the South's top 7 hospitals. It has a helicopter available 24/7 to respond. Pardee Hospital has installed a new landing pad at its facility.
The adjacency to the Pisgah National Forest, part of the Great Smokies, is a coveted benefit. The Blue Ridge Parkway is about 8 miles from Hendersonville and this provides access to what is the nation’s most well-regarded and frequented national park. The year round majesty of the forest is breathtaking. The waterfalls, tunnels, hundreds of miles of well-marked trails, access to Mt Mitchell (the Eastern half of the United State's highest peak) which is about 40 minutes away - all contribute to non-stop accolades.
The Biltmore Estate is 15 miles from Hendersonville and visible from Carriage Park. America's largest home, perched on a knoll, is on the northwestern side of Hendersonville. Sierra Nevada Brewery, this nation's largest and most successful microbrewery for boutique ales, has just purchased a site in Henderson County to be the new East Coast Headquarters. They are currently located in Chico, California and have conducted a nationwide search for their second location. They chose Hendersonville due to the quality of water they will have access to, the highway system and the genuine beauty of this area. Sierra Nevada Brewery is destined to become a major attraction as the company will feature a restaurant as well as facility tours.
Retirees are really interesting folks. Those who choose to relocate at retirement are fascinating, as many who relocate at this stage of life have adventurous minds to try new things. Many have been too busy working and raising their families. We find many choose to relocate to Hendersonville and Western North Carolina as they are attracted to all this area has to offer - an enormous range of vibrant activities, many which involve enjoying the 'great outdoors' . They also give back to the community in glorious ways. Our performing arts venues are impressive, our philanthropic activities are full speed ahead and the quality of our community is enhanced each time a new family takes up residence in Hendersonville.
