Riding The Carousel Of Time

There are certain sounds, like the sound of a plane flying overhead on a clear sunny day  that brings me right back to certain moments in my life. I can remember being about eight or so and climbing over a chain link fence when I heard that sound and can still picture my body still..taking in the moment of the sound..the sky and the scent Me in 1976of the air.

Music is like this as well. Today I was driving and Joni Mitchell's beautiful voice sang "The Circle Game". The first time I heard this song I was at a new friends house. We had just moved once again to another town..this time to Coram on Long Island and this girl (a huge Joni fan) invited another friend and I to come over and play our guitars with her. Oh the good old days when we would just hang out and attempt to strum the guitar and sing to our hearts content.

At 16, listening to the lyrics of this song, I could feel them but yet "We can't return we can only look behind from where we came" was something that was hard for me to understand at that time. I SO wanted to go back to that time when the sound of a plane stopped me, a time when the unspoken comfort of friends that I'd known since childhood surrounded me, a time when my family was a whole.

Changing leaves, West Linn Oregon 2012
Today as I listened, I took in the leaves changing colors once again and thought of this carousel of time I've been on. The dreams and fears of youth change to new ones, but thankfully some wisdom has come with this.

Knowing that the thunder is often fear in disguise, knowing that we can look back but can't change what was;cherished moments as well as mistakes; but can only change what will be, and knowing that some things we just have no control over has helped me move through this circle game.

Whenever I work with a new buyer or seller I realize that they are on their own carousel of time. Whether just starting out in life together, outgrowing their home with a growing family, or dealing with a death, divorce or needing to leave their life home for yet another phase of aging, they are moving through their own circle game. I love being there working right along with them bringing not only my knowledge but my empathy as well. I've been there and In this I CAN return to those times to remind me of what they are going through.

Songwriter: MITCHELL, JONI

Yesterday, a child came out to wander
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star

And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Then, the child moved ten times 'round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, "When you're older", must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams

And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came,
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
And they tell him, "Take your time. It won't be long now.
'Til your drag your feet to slow the circles down"

And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through.

And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and 'round and 'round
In the circle game
And go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game.

Oh, Cindy, I love Joni Mitchell music.

I can't believe I'm old enough to be living this line. 'Til your drag your feet to slow the circles down"

Yesterday, I was in the grocery store and a teenaged boy rang me up. I was bagging so I didn't notice. When I got home and looked at the receipt, I noticed he had given me the senior discount - without me asking! The problem is I'm not 55 and I'm not entitled to it. He obviously thought I was.

The good, The bad and The ugly??

Hi Jill, Oh, I can so relate! I was one of those breakfast places like Denny's when the waitress asked if I was going to get from the senior menu....say what?? I have 3 more years before that priviledge...but man...botox was starting to look good. FYI, you do NOT look 55.....but from a teenager perspective, anyone over 30 is old..that is until they turn 30.

Thanks Cindy,

Brings back many memories and a realization, that we really cannot return but only look back and remember what once was.  Thanks.
