Motivational Power Quote

The Listener Wins

“Know how to listen, and you will profit even from those who talk badly.”

Plutarch 46 AD – 120 AD,

As I see it . . . . . . .

The listener wins

Some people talk while other people communicate.

The person that talks without a purpose or to hear them self talk will come out second best in a negotiating process.

A talker in the negotiating progress will talk them self out of a successful negotiating position far more often than talking their way into a successful outcome.

The talker will miss what’s being said because they are thinking about what they want to say and they are not listening to what’s being communicating.

The listener wins . . . .

The listener will ask their questions with a purpose. They will also stack their questions to gather the additional information that will lead to successful negotiations. The questions will be open ended to encourage the other person to talk.

Many times by asking the questions the listener opens up the conversation to the point where the other person reveals their position in the negotiations giving the advantage to the listener.

A professional listener will carefully craft their questions, listen to the responses and sort the information into a strategic negotiating advantage.

The listener wins because they gather the information to successfully negotiate while the talker loses because they may say a lot but in the long run they don’t have the information to successfully negotiate.

This totally resonates with me.  In fact, my bio says "I listen for a living".  I am not sure how this resonates in a bio, but I can tell you from many years of using this as my differentiator that I know far more from listening than talking.  Great post, suggested.

The business we are in, we must be a good listener to be successful! (And, now I realize, I talk a lot...I need to change myself...soon)

Such important advice, Lou...really sums up the negotiating stance that wins.   And, savvy old Plutarch in those long ago Roman Empire days.

Could not agree more. Your point about talkers not listening because they are only thinking about what they want to say next is absolutely true. Good reading, thanks.

Listening...sad thing is we often would prefer to hear ourselves talk than anyone else in the world.
