From the SFist Inbox: Geary…?

It wouldn’t be SFist if it weren’t rife with errors and bipolarity-tinged posts. But we got word of an especially egregious error we made today–something, we’re ashamed to admit, we never knew. From the SFist inbox:

Re: Starbucks post, it is Geary Boulevard west of Gough, Geary Street east of Franklin. Thanks.

Now, we know how to correctly pronounce “Noe,” “Gough,” and “Montandon.” We know to always pretend that the SF Green/Progressive Party is inclusive to all types. And we know the way to San Jose. (Har. Eh. Sorry.) What we didn’t know was that Geary had a split personality.

Please advise.

Fun Filipino Factoid About Frederick N. Funston

January 19th, 2008 <!-- by admin0 -->

MajGenFrederickFunston.jpg

Dispatches from TJICistan points out a delightful fact about General Frederick N. Funston–the apparently sensitivity-free Medal of Honor recipient known for his manliness in both the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War, and the current namesake for Fort Funston–who once boasted the following. Ahem:

I personally strung up thirty-five Filipinos without trial, so what was all the fuss over Waller’s ‘dispatching’ a few ‘treacherous savages’? If there had been more Smiths and Wallers, the war would have been over long ago. Impromptu domestic hanging might also hasten the end of the war. For starters, all Americans who had recently petitioned Congress to sue for peace in the Philippines should be dragged out of their homes and lynched. [Wikipedia]

Which is interesting since Fort Funston is now a place of peace, known for its drum circles and popularity among the shower-estranged. In fact, do, for lack of a better word, hippie-ish types still congregate there? We seem to remember the sound of distant drumming there not so long ago. Do you remember when hippies owned Fort Funston? Or did they ever?

Come to the Cinema Supper Club at the Legion of Honor Museum

January 19th, 2008 <!-- by admin0 -->

What movie is about to play here at the Gould Theater? Well, anything you want, as long as it fits in with the Real Drama Queens theme.
GO8F8029a1.jpg
Today is Thursday so that means it’s time for another dinner/show combo at the Legion of Honor. Last week, we saw Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette along with a packed house. It was a fabulous evening.

The whole concept of is that you can get some food, check out some art and then watch a related film to cap off the evening. Is this a viable alternative to strapping on your Glock “safe action” pistol (for self-defense of course) and then heading on over to the Metreon? You bet it is.

You might not like all the movies shown (some of you are a little picky, it seems), but finding one you want to see (or see again) shouldn’t be too hard. See the movie schedule and check out the photos of all the food, folks and fun, after the jump.

Here’s the mise-en-scene at the cafe. There were lots of people in their 30’s — this is a younger crowd than what the Legion of Honor usually attracts.

You could drop close to $65 for dinner on a white tablecloth if you went whole hog with a wine flight to complement your meal. Or you could have an appetizer and entree for $30. Or you could just nosh on some filling tapas in a more casual environment without spending much at all.

Pork tenderloin. Yummers.

And of course you should leave some time to take in the world-class Marie Antoinette exhibit. Some people just come to see the movie and the exhibit without eating.

Check out the details on the Squid List and read a short review on Yelp. See you there!

January 17 Amadeus (1984, 160 min.), the Oscar-winning adaptation of Peter Shaffer’s play about the rivalry between two composers, Antonio Salieri, the Austrian court composer, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Legend has it, that as a 7-year-old Mozart declared that one day he would marry the young Marie-Antoinette.

January 24 Anne of the Thousand Days (1969; 145 min.) In the unsuccessful quest for a proper male heir, King Henry VIII’s royal love affairs mark the doomed fate of Anne Boleyn (Geneviève Bujold) and usher in the pivotal moment in British history where Henry promises to sign the Act of Succession to insure that daughter Elizabeth will be queen.

January 31 Elizabeth (1998; 124 min) Golden Globe winner, Cate Blanchett, transforms herself into one of history’s greatest monarchs, Queen Elizabeth I.

February 7 Mary, Queen of Scots (1972; 128 min.) This passionate and feisty costume dramas centered on the jealous feuding cousins, Mary Queen of Scotland (VanessaRedgrave) and Queen Elizabeth of England (Glenda Jackson).

February 14 The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen ofthe Desert(1994; 104 min.) The wickedly funny, high-drama trio of three drag-queens (Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp) are en route to perform a drag show in the remote Australian desert.

Pretty Sneaky, Starbucks!

January 19th, 2008 <!-- by admin0 -->

ashley%20olsen.jpg

This tickles us ever so. Last year after 4,000+ folks in the Richmond held their breath until their faces turned blue, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to ban the popular coffee chain Starbucks from setting up shop at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Geary. Problem solved, right? Wrong.

Being the crafty little coffee making bastards that they are, Starbucks “had the audacity to sneak a kiosk into the Safeway store at Cabrillo and Eighth.” (Hee!) Naturally, people curled up into the fetal position and started sobbing hysterically after seeing the chain serving its poisonous yet smooth brew. That is, until Jake McGoldrick got wind of this near-criminal activity and put his foot down. Hard. The kiosk has since stopped selling coffee there.

But isn’t Safeway–a chain itself, we should point out–neutral territory? The Switzerland of retail marketing?

Anyway, Starbucks beans are still, oddly enough, for sale on store shelves at Safeway, which is fine by all, it seems. But pulverizing the beans and pouring hot water though them into differently-sized paper cups is the real problem here? Huh. Curbed goes on to point out that “the final fate of the shop will be decided within the next month, as city planners decided whether the thing should be treated as a separate biz or part of Safeway itself. Tedium reigns.” And how.

Scenes From a Macworld Expo

January 19th, 2008 <!-- by admin0 -->

macworld.jpg

Jonathan Winston of Bikescape sends us this fury-inducing image he caught while wandering the catacombs of the Macworld Expo. It’s a “baseball cap mounted iPhone with a handy plastic magnifying strip. Just right for watching youtube while walking down Market Street!

Save for the bald, in good conscience we cannot promote the sporting of baseball caps. And we can just imagine the streets of San Francisco turning into a blood bath if iPhone users started slowing down instead of pulling over to watch “Turkey Lurkey Time” for the eighty-fourth time. (Because we all now know to pull over to the right-hand side of the sidewalk to text or watch clips, right? Well, now you do.)

Any other shots of interesting products over at Moscone? Send them our way. SFist was there earlier today, but unkempt children attending the Expo frightened us away. Little rat bastards.

Tiger Attack Update: You’re Either In or Out

January 19th, 2008 <!-- by admin0 -->

tigers%20mouth.jpg

In the battle to see who’s going down and who gets what and how much in court, new “evidence” suggests that possibly, maybe, perhaps Tatiana the tiger was provoked. It seems that said proof is in the form of a footprint and blood found inside the tiger enclosure at the SF Zoo. According to the kids down at KCBS:

…a significant amount of blood was found on an exhibit sign inside the tiger enclosure, a foot and a half from the public railing. The blood on the sign indicates someone may have climbed the railing and was attacked while standing in the planted area between the moat and the railing.

The source also said a footprint found on top of the three-foot high railing was located on a portion of the railing across from the sign.

Pro-Tatiana activist and SF Zoo spokesperson Sam Singer also confirmed that blood was found on foliage inside the tiger enclosure. But? How it got thee or whose veins the blood ran through prior to spattering remains unanswered. Khulbir and Paul Dhaliwal’s team of attorney deny that the boys were inside the enclosure during the now infamous Christmas Day big-cat attack that killed their friend, Carlos Sousa Jr.

Footprints? Blood? Rapscallions? We really need Jessica Fletcher on this case.

Murderous N Judah Streecar Drags, Kills Pedestrian

January 19th, 2008 <!-- by admin0 -->

OMG, run!
muderous%20n%20judah.jpg

N Judah Chronicles’ Greg Dewar will not be pleased. And neither will the rest of you.

Just weeks after colliding with a 90-year-old woman on the corner of 9th Avenue and Irving Street, an inbound N Judah stuck a man at 31st Avenue, dragging him to 28th, killing him in the process. Overhead news helicopters, a Judah Street closure, and a police investigation followed suit. What’s more, according to the Gate:

The incident was the second Muni accident of the night. About an hour earlier, a streetcar struck a car at 44th Avenue and Taraval Street, injuring several people who were transported to San Francisco General Hospital, a Muni spokeswoman said.

The number of people hurt and the extent of their injuries had not yet been determined, she said.

Charming.

The N Judah death, which occurred a little after 9 p.m last night, “stretched several blocks and…was very bloody.” Of course, this raises many questions. For example, who was the victim? What was he doing at the time? How in the hell did the streetcar operator not know that they had just hit someone? Did any passengers know? He was dragged? Will the N Judah please stop its current campaign of perambulator terror?

We will update you with more info as it comes to us.

Update: The Municide (TM SFist tipster) victim has been identified as 40-year-old Mark Callaghan. And–get this–it seems that the San Francisco resident was attempting to board the N-Judah train at 31st Avenue “when the doors closed…Callaghan tripped and fell…then was dragged underneath the streetcar.” Jesus.

SFist Video: Hillary’s Inner Tracy Flick from Slate Video

If you like that movie from Reese Witherspoon called Election, as many people do, you might also like this funny 90-second video from Slate.com.

And speaking of Clinton video, check out local KGO 7 reporter Mark Matthews mixing it up with Bill as they discuss the reaction to a huge Nevada culinary union’s recent endorsement of Barack Obama here. Then get Mark’s take on the minor dustup here. Per Jon Carroll, “Disenfranchising black voters - what a way to start the Second Clinton Presidency.”

You’ll be seeing a lot of this kind of stuff over the next few weeks. Enjoy.
