The Camas Urban Chicken and Garden Tour - Egg-citing!

Chickens and fresh eggsThis weekend, The Camas Farmers market is hosting the second annual Camas Urban Chicken and Garden Tour. It's an egg-citing concept of integrating domestic laying hens with backyard gardens in efforts to eat more fresh and organic foods.

Fourteen gardens are open for the Camas Urban Chicken and Garden Tour on Saturday, September 15th and Sunday, September 16th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is a benefit for The Camas Farmer's market which is held every Wednesday in downtown Camas.

The idea of growing your own food, and raising hens for fresh eggs is a popular one - and for good reason. People cite concerns over health, safety and economics as factors in to their decision to produce as food much as possible in urban gardens.

Opponents of the trend say it puts humans in close contact with poultry viruses and that should outweigh the benefits at this time. However, many cities are realistic about the popularity of small scale chicken farming and are working on new regulations and policies.

Regulations regarding backyard chicken coops in Clark County, WA.

Laying hens
Camas
- Chickens are legal, but noise and odor must cannot violate the public nuisance code.

Washougal - Poultry not allowed to roam at large within city limits.

Vancouver - Residents may have 3 hens, roosters and peacocks are banned due to noise.
Note: in unincorporated areas, chickens and roosters are allowed.

It's important to check your local zoning ordinances regarding backyard farming. For example, there may be setbacks for building coops - and a place to contain your poultry should be one of the first plans of action. Chickens need a coop for nesting and to protect them from predators.

Chickens and clucks and eggs - oh my!

If the idea of waking up to soft clucks, feathered friends and fresh Fresh Eggseggs appeals to you, be sure to take the tour this weekend. The Camas Urban Chicken and Garden tour is designed to educate and inspire you about raising chickens, growing fresh food and utilizing Clark County urban farming resources. How egg-citing!

What an interesting concept. There's nothing quite like fresh eggs and home grown produce.

Debb, I would really like to see that in action as to how they intergrate the chickens with their gardens and how clean and orderly it appears.

Debb, I have friends in SoCal who grow their own produce and have chickens for eggs.  Much healthier than the stuff the supermarket sells.  And cheaper, too!

Egg-cellent Debb.  Not eggs-actly my idea of a good time, but I'd be supportive.

Hi Debb - Roger stole my line! We're starting to see a lot more of this in town, and some of the coops are architectural marvels - we almost scored a really unique movable one from a listing a couple of months ago, but the buyer changed her mind and decided to keep it. Otherwise, we'd probably be explaining to our dogs who their new neighbors were.

Debb,

How fun, and when we lived in Napa, we had friends with chickens who produces beautiful green eggs.  They were free range albeit fenced in.  In our travels we discovered a nursery in Sonoma that had everytype of chicken variety on earth...including one that was a fluffy as a white angora cat...Fresh, fresh eggs are a treat.  A

Margo - Agree, I'm into the organic gardening, don't think I'm ready for the hen house. :)

Debbie, How to keep it clean and orderly, that is the big question for me too. Chicken poop all over wouldn't work for me. ;)

Hi there Janis, it will be fun and educational tour. I don't think I'm ready to raise any chickens, but I'm going to try to find local and organic eggs to buy from a backyard farmer.

Debb, I miss our chicken and the fresh eggs but I do not miss the rats that invaded their space. Thats why we gave them away.

Debb, great information on chickens!   We have had many of our local cities change zoning to allow up to 4 chickens, no roosters, and the homesteading is really popular!

Debb,

Now that's the American Spirit! This sounds like so much fun and it's educational too!

Going organic is the best way to go. The health of your nation, especially our children depend on it.

Thanks for this great post!!!

Hey Linda, thanks for the visit. I think I'll find a local source too. The few times I've had fresh eggs, I loved them.

Shannon, it's such a growlng trend, I'm sure there will be lots of support for it.

Roger, that's egg-actly what I expected from you. :)

Dick, that sounds like an interesting design. I would love the fresh eggs, just don't want to put up with all the rest that comes from keeping chickens. Although, perhaps there's something I don't know about...

Alexandra, that white chicken would go well with Mac! I think they are interesting animals and love fresh eggs - but don't I have the energy to have a coop of my own at this time.

Debb,

I really like the fresh egg s in the morning concept but I am not so sure I would want a bunch of chickens raoming my yard and home. Interesting concept.

Love your clever title Debb! I've only had fresh eggs once and they were the best eggs I ever ate. I hope the Camas Urban Chicken and Garden Tour was a huge success. I'm sure it raised the bar for what a good egg really tastes like! See you soon Sweetie!
