My Paperless Real Life Challenge September 2012

Last week I had a challenge for my real estate business when my laptop computer crashed. At first I was worried but after I walked away from the bugger computer I realized that I had absolutely nothing to be sweating about, not one thing. But honestly it did freak me out because we were working on some short sale files and we needed to submit critical paperwork that day.

A year or so ago ActiveRain and DocuSign created the first paperless challenge - of which I thought I entered but apparently  I did not enter, which surprised me. I have been working on getting as paperless as possible since 2009/2010.  We're almost paperless - not quite - but almost.

Ok back to the current ActiveRain/ DocuSign Challenge........

The day I freaked out I realized rather quickly thatIs a paperless real estate office realistic we have successfully gotten all of our files, our database and every other program we use in the CLOUD this past year.  I was able to easily get a hold of whatever document I needed from my iPad and successfully upload and/or email them out to where ever they needed to go. Whew! That saved my you know what that day! We also have everything backed up - twice - just in case their are issues.

As the Designated Broker for our real estate company in Arizona I am responsible for being able to 'print' out every single file should I ever get audited by the Department of Real Estate. We have a very small company and could manage printing out our files fairly easily but hopefully that is never required.  I heard that one of the largest brokerages in town - over 4000 agents - has gone back to printing out all contracts because of this ruling. So much for being paperless in this day and age for that type of firm.

Our MLS does offer a signature solution and it's easy to 'wet' sign documents from my iPad or tablet. The only draw back is that if the clients are not in front of me that doesn't work. We don't have DocuSign so that is next on my list.  Why have I not needed DocuSign you ask?  Because the majority of our out of town clients are bidding on short sales and I need wet signatures for this type of file. Hopefully in the next year or so short sales will be mostly in the past or far and few between traditional listings/sales. At that point I can foresee being 100% paperless and working in CLOUD HEAVEN.

I hate it when my laptop dies....  Great post.  I need to get busy with this challenge as well.  Paperless is the way to go - but why do I feel like my head is in the Clouds so much of the time....

Hi Anna, Great post and well written challenge. Going paperless is so important and my company uses Dot Loop even though I prefer Relay. I still keep all my pics, documents and transactions in my laptop so I need to get one of those backup systems before I have a meltdown.

Anna- I am trying to go paperless personally and for work.  In the past when my laptop road off into the sunset I would not be a happy camper.  However since I've been putting forms etc in the clouds as well as on my thumb drive I'm much more relaxed when it happens.

Thank God for an IT person that is dating my 5 year assistant. . . he is very dependable and when the laptop or computers die, he is there!!  We are all learning about "the Cloud" and going paperless, it's very exciting to me.
