What was that? Surprise visitors.

What was that?

I was working away on my computer in my home office, and suddenly there was a noise that sounded like someone at the door, but no one knocked.  Then it happened again, and a third time, only now it sounded like the sound was right outside my window, like a scratching on the outside of the house or something.

Curiosity got the better of me and I opened the door and looked through the screen.  Here is what I found.

****

Apparently, they had been on the roof, right over my head, and that is what I was hearing.  You can see the last few of them flying down from the roof.

There are a couple of big turkey families who traipse through our yard every day, but usually all I hear are their quiet gobble noises.  None of that this time - just the sounds of them on the house.

By the way, in case you wonder what kind of crazy filter I used on this, I filmed it through the screen door because I didn't want to frighten them.

Susan: I love the video. Am a big fan of wild turkeys. I had one that used to come and beg for peanuts. And it used to play with a cat from down the street.

Hella - Me too.  We've watched this group grow from tiny newborns to just about full grown. The white one is the mom.  We wee a couple of these families, and sometimes they all come together.

Pete - these turkeys are not afraid of Thanksgiving.  They parade right down the street, but luckily, no one harms them.

Sussie - Mean?  Not our Fair Oaks turkeys!  lol

Kathy - We get an occasional peacock, but not often.  And of course, Fair Oaks is full of wild chickens too.

Hi Susan, I find your story fascinating and love the video. They are different colors and sizes. One time right after we moved here someone kept knocking on my front door but no one there??? Finally I went outside to the driveway and two huge geese were standing there an having a conversation. I scared them so they flew onto the roof and finally flew away. I thought it was exciting.

Kristin - It wasn't long ago that these guys were little tiny things following their mom around the neighborhood.  Now they are like teenagers - long legged and kinda gawky looking.  Mom, however, is beautiful.

Pat - I'm afraid I couldn't even think of eating a bird or animal that I know personally, and I've watched these guys grow up.  I think they are destined for a long life!

Hi Susan,

There must no be any dogs around your place. I have seen even little dogs go nuts around wild birds. But I am with you on not being able to eat the neighborhood wildlife  which you come to know and they learn not to fear you.

Just looked at another post showing Thnksgiving dinner (to be, anyway) and here is another one. Are they trying to eacape or just getting pre-revenge for the upcoming holiday?

Susan, I love it. I'm wondering whether there was some cross breeding going on with maybe an escaped Domesticated turkey? Just wondering about the lighter colored one, very pretty!

Great video Susan. That is quite a flock and they look pretty tame as well. Isn't it fun co-existing with nature?

One of the things I love most about living in Fair Oaks is all the wonderful critters that visit our property.  I don't know why the mom is so white, but often there are two whitish moms walking around together with about 2 dozen of their youngsters (really teenagers now!).
