I'm approaching the end of a short sale that has gone moderately well. That alone is a miracle, but there is another aspect of this one that has surprised me. I inherited this couple from another agent who didn't have the stomach for short sales. He tried to get them through the process, but he just didn't like the battle a short sale can be. It doesn't bother me that much.
The wife dropped by the office late this week to ink one more signature before it goes to closing. We sat
around and chatted briefly, and then I walked her to her car. While we were walking she said, "So, this is it? I mean, once this goes to closing you'll go your way and we'll go ours. Does that mean we won't see you anymore?"
I was a little taken back by her heartfelt question. She continued asking how we could keep our friendship fresh. I promised her we would get together. Of course we could keep up online, through calls and texting, but she wanted a little more concrete commitment. So, I guess I've added another family to my collection. I don't mind though. I've got lots of storage room for more. The world is plenty big to house them all.
Sometimes, you just can't get rid of clients. Good!

Mike this sounds very familiar to me as it happens a lot. Great people create solid bonds and it's not so easy to just say.....bye bye after it closes. And there is no reason to do so. Lifetime friends I say!
Good job Mike! It always feels good when your client wants to be your friend. It feels like you've done something really good and they appreciate you that much.
Ah, Mike! This may be as close as you'll come to post partum depression.
Thanks for the great story. This business has it's rewards.
Just one more thing that confirms you're a great guy who really cares about his clients. Nice story Mike.
Morning Mike someone may have already said this but apparently you made one heck of an impression on the client excuse me friend. I'm sure they will pass on your name so a referral or two is a good thing. Keep us up to date if that happens
I hve a feeling that you stay in contact with your clients Mike.
Hi Mike. Our business does make it hard to continue relationships. Good luck.
Well said, Michael.
Judith, that's a perfect analogy of a short sale. 8=)
Absolutely, John. It's fun, and in a lot of cases it leads to referrals. Yea!
It tickled me, Debbie. I thought others would find it fun too.
Now that's an idea, Andrea. 8=)
It does feel strange, Nancy. I do try to touch base with my past clients from time to time.
This is a strange business in how relationships build and then dissolve, Anna. I like it better when folks stay in touch.
It does, Jason.
Too funny, Pat. Have a great Sunday.
Yes it does, Frank.
Thanks, Roger. These folks were feeling pretty beat up when I got them. It's nice to see them come full circle.
Thanks, James. They already have. I do appreciate that part!
I try to keep up with most, Tom. I have a group that turn properties around every other year or so. That's nice.
Thanks, Conrad. It is strange how the relationships form over weeks or months of steady work, and then they go away. I tend to keep contact with a lot.
Hey, Mike! I included this post in Last Week's Favorites. Have a great week!
Isn't that the best feeling? When you just don't want to let go of a client after the closing table. I think that is the best sort of transaction of all.
Thanks, Pat. It's always a honor to be included.
It is nice, Kathryn. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it's special.
I think going through a difficult transaction is a bonding experience. There's a hope that the relationship built is good because the patience should translate into a lot of referrals.
Mike, we find that a number of our clients become friends. This weekend we had dinner at the home we sold to clients who relocated from another state. We enjoy their company.
Mike- I 'd say that is a testament to how you make your clients feel!
It really has been on this one, Bryan, and these folks have already started the referral process. It's all good.
Excellent, Pat and Steve. You're doing a great job.
Thanks, Kathy. We had a good time.
Hi Mike - That's great. One of my best friends now is a gal who I helped through a short sale, and two years later she is in a new home I helped her buy. You can't help getting emotionally involved with some of the short sale sellers. They each have a sad story and are looking to us to help them through a terrible time in their lives. Sounds like you did a wonderful job for them.
Mike, this is very telling on you - that you not only are a very skilled real estate professional who has the stomach for the twists and turns of short sales, but also that you are one nice guy! :)
Sharon
Mike~ Good for you. You must have made a real impression on this family for her to ask such a question.
