Happy Birthday to the King of the Blues - B.B. King!


B. B. King is without question the King of the Blues.

And today the King celebrates his 87th birthday!

(Shameless plug moment: Other famous people who share September 16th as their special day: Lauren Bacall, Peter Falk and Craig Rutman too!)


Born September 16, 1925, on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi, Riley B. King played on street corners for dimes, and would sometimes play in as many as four towns a night.

In 1947, he hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, to pursue his music career.

The rest, as they say, is history!

With one of the world's most identifiable guitar styles, BB has been a touring machine over the years playing an average of 240 concerts annually.


I've seen B.B. in concert a gazillion times and he's still got it going on! His band is as tight as ever. His vocals haven't lost a thing. And when he plays his guitar Lucille, B. B. can still make even the most accomplished musician wish they had half of BB's talent!

So, no matter what you're doing today, take a few minutes out to honor the King of the Blues, B. B. King!

I remember discovering B B King when I was about 17 years old and have been a fan ever since. Funny, I had to go to England first. Not really, but I loved Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and they talked about hime, then I learned so many of the guitarists I admired were influenced by the King!
