Remember in Matthew 18:21 Peter asks Jesus how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? (vs 21 KJV)
In verse 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say unto thee, until seven times, but seventy times seven. Jesus then goes on in verse 23 to tell the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant.
There was a King who was taking account of all the money that was owed to him by his servants. There was one servant who owed him 10,000 talents. The servant could not afford to pay it and so the king said well sell him, his wife, children and all that he owns to pay off his debt.
The servant fell down and begged for the King to have patience with him and he would pay all of his debt. The King was moved with compassion and forgave the servant of his debt.
Well that very servant went out and found one of his fellowservants that owed him 100 pence. He became angry with him and grabbed him by the throat saying, pay me what you owe me. His fellowservant fell to his feet and begged for the servant to have patience with him. But the Servant would not. He cast him into prison until he could pay the debt.
So when the other fellowservants saw what he had done they were sad and told the King. The King called him in and said to him I forgave you all of the debt you owed me. Shouldn't you have had the same compassion on the fellowservant just like I had pity on you?
The King was very angry and threw the Servant into jail till he could pay all that was due to the King.
Jesus said in (verse 35 KJV), Likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
Being able to forgive, brings you closer to the heart of God.
