Thanks to Sheila Newtons post we can all improve our Facebook Fan Page. I am going to share this with my staff and thought I'd reblog and share with those of you that missed this when she posted earlier.

How are you liking the new Facebook timeline? I have noticed that not everyone has converted even though it was supposed to be mandatory a few months ago.. If you are using it, I'm sure you have noticed how different it is.

The one thing I really like about timeline, is that you can customize your by using the Facebook page cover photo.

Facebook has become one of my favotite ways to market.  Here are 6 of my favorite Facebook tips about using Timeline..  See what you think....

Make Sure To Have a Relevant Cover Photo To Your Business - (851px width & 315px height)

The first thing you see when you log onto Timeline is the large cover photo. In my opinion, it is the most beneficial part of the new layout. In the lower left corner is still your own profile photo or icon.. it is 180x180 px.

Choosing the right cover photo and profile image is the easiest way to brand your page. One thing to be aware of though is there are some terms of use with Facebook that prevent you from  having contact information or direct promotions  in the cover photo.  I don't know how strict they are with that, but better safe than sorry!

Take Advantage of the ‘Pin to Top’ Feature

New posts on your page are displayed at the top and that pushes older posts down the page.  If you use the "pin to top" feature (see photo) then that  will always be displayed at the top of your timeline above every other post. I really like this feature since it can be used to promote a certain property, create a "bio" about you or any other info you want to have displayed in a prominent location!

Highlight Your Most Important Posts with the "Star" Button

You know, that little star in the right hand corner of a post.. use it to highlight a post by clicking on the icon. This is great to help break up the normal two column look of the Timeline since that stretches the post out over the entire width of the page. It also puts focus on that particular post!

Make Use of Custom Tabs and Thumbnails ( under the large cover photo)

Under the cover photos is where you can include 12 custom tabs (blocks) on you r page that can an icon and title. This will link to a particular app or even link out to your website. For the most part, you can arrange these however you like but the first tab is always for photos by default, but you can customize the rest to suit your needs.

If you have a blog, one of the tabs can link to that. You can have one for listings or just about anything you can think of. I have one for my twitter page.. One of the tricks is to get a good custom icon for the thumbnail to grab the attention of the reader!

Integrate your Page With Twitter

One of the ways is to  use the Facebook integration features for Twitter is to connect with Twitter directly from your profile settings or via an app. You can even display your tweets in your timeline. I like to auto-post to your Twitter account to save time from having to then go to twitter and post again there. I really love this  great feature!

Syndicate Your RSS  Blog Feed

If you have a blog, syndicate  It with one of the free apps. This will automatically post your blogs onto your facebook site. This keeps your TImeline up-to-date and keeps new content coming in. This way you don't have to remember to visit your Timeline everyday to post something new. It is on autopilot! It also helps get more subscribers and "likes" which we all want.

Do you have some other tips you can share with us? please feel free to leave them in the comments. :)
