Late last night, the National Zoo's proud parents, Mei Xiang and her husband, Tian Tian, welcomed a bouncing baby panda cub into the world - about the size of a stick of butter.  And while it's impossible to see this little bundle of joy by visiting the Panda House (it's closed to give the pandas some privacy) you can see the little guy on the panda cam (and therefore invade their privacy).

Actually, it's really hard to get onto the Panda cam these days.  There is so much traffic that they even set up a second cam, and I haven't been able to get onto either one.  But it's pretty easy to watch the video of the whole birth

Yeah, they are really, really concerned about this family's privacy!  I have to wonder.  DId Mei Xiang know that her cub's delivery was being videoed and broadcast over the Internet?

OK, Kate future queen of England.  Forget the topless photos of you on vacation with your husband.  Imagine the tabloids invading the delivery room as you give birth to the heir - or in this case, the spare!  Mei Xiang just experienced  a real invasion of privacy!

Janis, it's hard to believe that parents this big could have a baby so tiny!

Pat

So cool - they are such neat animals and always fun to watch. I saw newborns at the San Diego zoo a few years ago. It's interesting how much attention they attract all over the world.

Oh, Pat, what fun dishing about panda babies and Kate's vacation photos all in one blog!  I feel kinda boring, because MY vacation photos won't make nearly the splash that hers has!  (I haven't gotten to see that--boy the poor Queen has got to be miffed at all of the sexual hoopla going on in her surroundings!) I am wondering if Kate will be sent off to war now, TOO!!

Hi Pat, Using the Mac, I am having to download a plug-in to update the Windows Media player. I will see if I can get in then. Our Pandas had a little one about a month ago. Must be something in the air or not, LOL.

I am still laughing at Gail's comment. Kate probably doesn't do war so maybe they will send her to Kenya.

The new baby panda is very good news and will attract thousands of families to the National Zoo.

Enjoy the changing colors of the season with your camera in hand.

Oh cool. Pandas are so cute, esp baby Pandas.  I'm sure some picts will be on Pinterest soon.

That is really odd about the "privacy" thing.

Interesting!  I always had my camera in the delivery room too!  I think it was a Kodak Instamatic.  With the cube...

Gayle, well, Will and Kate are married, after all! And if anyone got a pic of me topless, it might have to go on the humor page. William, and if it's Kate in Kenya, the wide-angle lenses are sure to follow. And I'll have to update my plug-in, too And apparently you can't gey anywhere near the nursery. All of the adorable kids they interviewed on TV last night didn't seem too bummed about it.

Paul, they really are totally adorable.  I'm sure the zoo will sell out of the stuffed ones by now.

Patricia, funny you mentioned the hypothetical filming of the birth of a royal heir. In times long past, there used to be official witnesses not only to the birth but also to the event of conception! Oh my!
