The NFL has become the most popular sport in America in the last decade and seems to only be growing stronger.  There are many (me include) that will waste a whole Sunday sitting in front of the T.V screaming at our favorite teams.  With how much money the NFL is generating, It is hard to believe that referee’s from D3 and high school football programs are out there calling the shots.

It seems to all have come to a head in last nights Monday Night Football game.  I don’t know how many of you saw it but it was almost unbearable.  If the hour long first quarter wasn’t enough to make you want to change it, then the three calls overturned and 18 penalty flags in the second quarter surely did.  It seemed like the players had more control over the game then the refs.

It seems that the NFL is standing strong by their decision to use replacement refs and has made a schedule for the first five weeks.  It is pretty hard that a league with profits over 8 billion is fighting over a 1 million dollar salary increase.  We get the point Roger, you are the boss, NOW CAN WE PLEASE HAVE THE REAL REFEERES BACK !!!

Nice post. I have truly been amazed at how well these replacement refs have performed given the circumstances. I agree it will be good to get the professional refs back. Having said that, how quickly we forget the games where the professionals blew calls and cost our favorite teams the game. It is a hard job.

I give the replacement refs a lot of credit for showing up and giving it their all.  They need to feed their families and for some of them, it may be their big break.  However, for the most part, just as with the athletes, the jump to the NFL (NBA, MLB, NHL, etc.) is a huge change of pace....that's what separates them from the hundreds of collegiate/non-professional positions.  The NFL really needs to address the situation because the season and the teams are really suffering.  Additionally, I'm concerned their mis-management of the game may result in serious player injuries.
