Downtown Portland Photo Op, Making The Best Of Traffic!
So here I am just driving along when traffic merging onto I-5 came to a slow crawl. They've been working on the roads around the Portland Metro area...yea for quiet nicely paved roads, but slow traffic comes with this improvement. I'm often driving over many of our Portland bridges (we aren't called the bridge city for nothing) and often wish I was able to snap some of the fantastic views of downtown Portland, but this is very hard...and dangerous when you're driving 55 mph...(yep..sticking to that one)
As I was slowly passing this one stretch where the chain link fence opened up, I quickly pulled my I-phone out of it's car stand and started snapping away not sure if I'd get a good shot or not. I was pleasantly surprised when this one came out pretty clear.
Now when I'm in traffic on I-5 or one of our bridges, If I don't have my camera easily handy, I'll once again grab my phone and take advantage of some photo ops that are very hard to get!

The Hawthorne Bridge in the photo was built in 1910 and is the oldest operating vertical lift bridge in the United States!

Hi David, we were at a crawl...so there was no standing to be done. No toll booths either. I just rolled down my window and snapped away.
That's a great shot Cindy! I'm the same way with my phone when the opportunity arises. It's like trying to make the best of snarled traffic and grabbing the opportunity when it comes. If it makes you feel any better, I don't think there's a street in SF right now that isn't being worked on. It makes Tuesday tour a real joy ride (to say the least).
Hi David, Oh, I bet you get some really great shots too! Thankfully the I-phone has a pretty good camera on it...so I know I always have a camera with me as backup. I do love how quiet and smooth the newly paved roads are....but also love when the blacktop fairies do most of the work at night while I'm blissfully sleeping so it doesn't mess with the day.
Hi Cindy, now that's what I call seizing the opportunity! The picture turned out great, too, I would never have guessed that you snapped it while still moving and with your cell phone. I've missed some great photo opps because I was too slow getting my camera out and ready ... zooming ... My phone is old (by technology standards) and the pictures are starting to show it. Another 6 months on my contract until I can upgrade .. and then I'll be able to take advantage of photo opps when I am crawling along in DC area traffic.
Hi Andrea, You always have such gorgeous pics! Just a couple of seconds after this photo was taken, was a huge chain link fence that blocked the view...so it really was a perfect moment to get the shot!
Cindy, now THAT is a mighty fine photo! I was just thinking today how beautiful a city Portland is (I came in for the day). I can't wait to hear the reaction from Kris Ginsberg, who's due to arrive in our fair city on the 24th! She and a few others are coming up for a galpal retreat at the lake. We've been planning this for close to a year. I'm thinking of taking them to NW 23rd for some shopping. I'm already trying to scope out a parking space, as you know how hard those are to come by up there!
Great shot! I'm stlii not moving back. Visiting the Pearl District for a weekend or looking you up for lunch during a weekday is about it for me.
Hi William, It gives me new appreciation for the effort it takes to get in that perfect position to get certain photos. This was literally seizing the moment given to me!
Hi Gayle, Oh, you must be just just jumping out of your skin waiting for the gal pals to arrive! Of course Kristine already knows how gorgeous Fish Hawk Lake is through your photos and tales but having her and your other buds there together...much fun! NW 23rd is a great place to spend a few hours. I always end up parking on one of the side streets and ya just home the parking space Gods are watching over you. I can't wait to see the blogs you'll write!!
Hi Rob, although I love Portland, I also love the ocean. If I had the opportunity to live in Florence, then I might just not want to leave as well!
Cindy, that's a great photo being snapped from a phone while crawling in traffic! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Kat, All the odd things seemed to be in place at that moment to oddly get a pretty decent shot of Portland.
I remember doing some research on Portland and did not come across that it is known as the city of bridges. Useful information.
Hey there Cindy Lou - nice shot of Portland. It looks so lovely on sunny days - this is serendipitous. The universe moved together to allow you this photo op. :)
Hi Cindy,
What a lovely picture of the Portland area! Smart of you to think to take our your phone and snap a picture! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Jill, Since the Willamette River divides the city, there are about 14 bridges that take you over it in the Portland Metro area. I was on the Columbia River a few weeks back and was able to watch the train bridge turn sideways to allow a sailboat to go through.
Hi Debb, Oh..love that word..serendipidous! I was thinking that the road crew peeps probably get really good photo ops from places that are normally full of moving traffic. Don't see too many of them wearing a camera around their neck though!
Hi Carla, thanks! It was a last minute thought when the fence opened up and there was that perfect shot. I was really surprised it wasn't just a blur!
Beautiful shot, Cindy. When I read your blogs on Portland, I just feel how much you seem to love the area. You are an interesting blogger and now a special photographer.
