Do you write your blogs the same way you Google?

How do you Google?

In a recent conversation between my 16 year old daughter and my husband (her father), I started to question if there is indeed an age gap in the way we search for things online. My husband, it seems, according to my 16 yr old, does it the hard way. He tries to use actual keywords.

If there is a water ring on a wooden table, he would try to Google, "water ring removal wooden table"

water ring removal wood furniture

My daughter, on the other hand, would search, "how do I get a water ring out of a wooden table"

While both searches will capture results, my daughter claims that typing the actual question will get you better, more accurate, results. I will say, getting the screen shots, it is interesting how much more I had to type in my husband's method before Google would fill in the rest. So, does this mean that my daughter's method is actually the more accurate way? Maybe it just shows a trend as to how searches are now being performed.

This is an interesting question when it comes to writing our blogs. As we insert our keywords, studying up on longtail SEO, how long of a tail do you try to get? If Googlers are writing out entire sentences to determine where to find something, should we be writing this way?

So, how do you Google? Do you write your blogs the same way?

I tend to google both ways...interesting.  I've typed the whole question and sometimes I just type key words.  I guess I'm not going to be much help to you at all, LOL!

I do get much better results when I type in the actual question.  However, when I'm on the hunt for everything around a topic, I'll do a broader keyword only thing and plod through the inevitable shlock.  My most often used tactic, however, is using the advanced search function to get recent answers, not out of date stuff from 2008/9/11 even. So much has changed in my space!

Sharon - I'm like you, I do both. I have noticed that lately I've been just asking the question I want answered.

Marti - Yay! Thanks for the cookie!

Juliet - Nice to see you in the rain. I don't even know how the advanced search works, so I may have to find that out at some point.

Michele - Do you notice any difference in traffic when your blog titles are written as the question people are searching for?

Melissa, it is a good idea to put different key words in when writing posts you want to be found!    GREAT advice.

Melissa, you have your own Google Analytics team at your house.  That was a great experiment.  My wife and I have been discussing the way Gen Y operates lately.  It's tough for us old timers to grasp, but it's a new day which demand new tactics from us.

Joan - so long as you don't use too many keywords and confuse google

Mike - it's funny the experiments we conduct around here - particularly when it comes to music or technology...

Melissa - This really is food for thought.  Whenever I have social media discussions with my daughters, it usually ends in them just rolling their eyes at me!  Maybe we should be should be writing our blogs with an idea of what age group we're trying to capture?
