I recently ran into an article about falsely accused famous Russian scientist academician Igor Reshetin, who spent nearly 7 year in prison.
He wrote that at one of the safe houses in Moscow, where they help preliminary interrogations he had to use the bathroom, and there was a handwritten note stuck to the door, that read:
If you think, keep your mouth shut...
If you do not keep your mouth shut, then do not write...
If you write, do not sign anything...
If you think, speak, write and sign... do not get surprised
In English it loses that sub-context that my eyes pick right away. It is this sub-context, which is scary.
I first wrote «Unfortunately, in English...» and then I thought that we are unbelievably fortunate that you are not trained to read through the lines and fear what is not written, but what is meant...
This is not from Stalin's times. Igor Reshetin writes about the event that took place about 6-7 years ago, in now democratic Russia... yeah, yeah, yeah...
Socialism is always a stone's throw away... close to start shattering windows in our homes ...
P.S. Do not get me wrong. We are still thinking, speaking out, writing and even signing what we write... but there is more and more reluctance to do so. Due to increasing litigation, concerns that we lose clients, hope that there would be enough others fighting for us.
Will there be enough?
Socialism does not start with mass executions and abject poverty, it ends with them. It starts when we become indifferent and do not speak out...When we trade a little freedom for a little of security...
If we do not fight for the good life that we are enjoying, we do not deserve it. And we will not have it.

Gwen - I am nervous watching this, too
Rafeeq - absolutely. Thank you
At the moment it is not the government threatening to shut someone down, but the government's (at least liberal side) invisible hand the MSM. If you aren't following their beliefs and party line they will attack you to no end, just look at Joe the Plumber, Sarah Palin and anyone else they don't like.
Heck, the MSM even published a story on Paul Ryan's college girlfriend who was convicted of bank fraud (I think I remember that correctly), but we now nothing of Obama's past.
The mainstream media is a traitor to the American people, although we can know the truth if we care to.
Than - I do not want to know anything about Obama's past. I am afraind of my and children's future. learning abut his past is 4 years too late ;)
Jon...So many of us see this and the greater pop. just doesn't get it. but that is many times because they are thinking only of themselves and today and Hell with tomorrow.
It is someone like yourslef that helps me see that I am not crazy for thinking as I do!
Thank You!
William - believe me, I need the same reassurance. Otherwise I can start thinking that I am a nut (LOL)
Jon - they are ideologically correct, even if it means shooting themselves in the foot... but rather they are shooting us in the head
Jon, the recent movement to undo the rights and privileges we fought for and won is incredibly frightening. I understand your concern about the right to discipline your child without the government stepping in. If you go to far with the discipline then the neighbor SHOULD step in to prevent discipline from turning into assault. Even more frightening to me personally is the insistence from certain factions that our basis for government should be rooted in religion, not EVERYONE's religion mind you...
I embrace your last statement, I just don't want a select small group determining the definition of a good life for me. If we do not fight for the good life that we are enjoying, we do not deserve it. And we will not have it.
Mona - what you seem to refuse to understand is that actions of the government hurt a lot of families and kids. If the neighbor and a social worker have more say than parents, it is disturbing.
Since wehn you do not trust parents and trust government, which would put kids to the worst foster care yo can imagine, where people do it as business.
have you seen kids who went through foster care? Do you know how many broken lives are there?
This is exactly the danger of the governmenbt which you do not notice.
how come parents in Russia could take care of their kids and in America you can't trust them? Since when leather is a problem, but not other things, way more serious?
Iranians can deal with kids and not afraid that the governemtn would take kids from them, and in America we can't trust Parents?
Well, as for good life, we know what it is. Soon we will know what it was. What small group you are talking about. For me The President is this small group who decided that they need to emulate the country I managed to escape.
Jon: I consider myself well-read as far as politics is concerned, but I do not see the same threat of Socialism as you do. For me... my greater fear is one of Fascism. The far right... the ultra-conservative... they're all about control. Of just about everything that really should be a personal choice.
Our government should NOT be engaged in turning people's conservative religious views into laws... and then forcing everyone to live their lives according to those beliefs and laws. They do that in Iran, in Syria, in Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. That is not what I want my country to emulate.
I am just very, very surprised to see all of the ideas that you speak of in both this post, and in your comments.
Karen Anne - fascism is not and never has been far right, it is extreme left, and in this sense there is no really much difference between Socialism in the Soviet union of Stalin era and German fascism.
And the leading party in Germany was National Socialist Party.
I am not religious, never was.
Iran is a governed by religious group, and it is a religious type of ruling but Syria is a secular country, as was Iraq.
I come from the big government country and I for one know what it means. I have experience, and when you can read that it is inefficient, I know more than that. I know that inefficient is not only about results, I know how it is about people, the very people you are talking about.
Karen Anne, I am not surprised that you do not see the same threat. It is only normal. You lived all your life without it, and it is not a threat to you. you have not learned to know the signs and feel it.
Like dogs, who get very nervous seconds before the earthquake, while people do not feel it yet, the same is with us, people who had lived under socialism. We know these seconds before it happens.
I would rather not have this feeling, but I have it all in my skin. To tell you the truth, I am very surprised that people who love America, do not scream.
We are on a Titanic. Are we to give the second chance to the guy who is going to hit the Iceberg? Is what he has done already not enough?
I am very surprised.
Jon -
It's a sad but true fact that just as Stalin and Lenin had, and relied upon their "useful idiots", who were either naïve, foolish, or in willful denial of their true intentions, we have no shortage of people who continue to drink the Obama Kool-Aid, completely oblivious to what he's all about, and what he's doing to America - with rather frightening speed.
And Karen Anne -
Jon is right - Fascism is far Left, not Right. And one of the most Fascistic moves in our lifetimes, was Obama's completely unprecedented take-over of the auto industry.
The bond holders, who are always in first position with respect to being compensated in bankruptcy reorganization, were just kicked to the curb (greatly harming many investors, including union and other pension funds). And he just handed the bulk of the companies to his union cronies, save for the horrible investment he made in the stock "we" bought, but will likely never see a profit on (we're still at a huge loss position right now). And because "we" are still major shareholders, Obama carries a lot of sway over what the company does and does not do, and that's classic Fascism.
And he may not be done. From a couple of his recent campaign speeches - In Pueblo, Colorado, he said, " “Now, I want to do the same thing with manufacturing jobs, not just in the auto industry, but in every industry.” And in Colorado Springs, he said, “I want to say what we did with the auto industry, we can do it in manufacturing across America.”
Jeff - why is that? So we feel guilty for the good life we have? It is so hard to understand
Jon -
Sadly, many of them are simply oblivious to politics, and unbelievably clueless.
Check out this short, (7:29 minutes) clip from Howard Stern's radio show today - he sent a couple of his guys onto the streets of New York to ask Obama supporters about the coming elections.
They asked various outrageous questions, including if Romney is a Muslim; if Obama made the right choice by picking Paul Ryan as his running mate, and if he picked Ryan because he is black; and if they believe Obama will finally find and kill Osama bin Laden. One or two people were even under the impression that McCain & Palin were also running this time.
"Just trust me, not one person knew that Osama bin Laden was dead," Stern said during the segment.
It's very frustrating that people so far out of the loop will be cancelling the votes you and I cast. Too bad there's no test of basic civics & politics knowledge required to vote, the way there is to become a citizen.
You are so right Jon, we need to be reminded of this often,
Socialism does not start with mass executions and abject povbrerty, it ends with them. It starts when we become indifferent and do not speak out...When we trade a little freedom for a little of security...
If we do not fight for the good life that we are enjoying, we do not deserve it. And we will not have it.
Jeff - I watched the video just now, and I couldn't stop laughing. It would have been hilarious if not for the thought that these people will be voting in the coming elections.
Bob - thank you for your stance.
I think that this is very interesting. I am actually considering writing a book, but am concerned that it is overreaching what I should not say. Hhhmmm.
The US Constitution was written to protect us from all this - but we have judges, bureaucrats and elected officials that are willing to ignore the Constitution - or worse, rewrite it. The founders had it right and designed a government that was limited in power. But we have let the genie out of the bottle in the last century and I do not know how to put it back.
Almost 40 years ago, I travelled to Berlin in Germany and visited both the east sectors and the west sectors of the city. I can not find the words to describe the differences. West Berlin was a modern city with bright lights and people in restaurants and sounds in the streets of people enjoying themselves. East Berlin, just across Checkpoint Charlie was gray and drab and quiet with guards on the wall - not to keep people out but to keep people in. The contrast from East to West within that one city was remarkable. It was as if my mind filmed in color in the West and black and white in the East.
And now - within two generations - half of my friends and neighbors are willing to vote for option B. Mr Obama has, in my view, done irreparable harm to my country. He has done more to destroy our economy than anybody in my memory. He has managed to take certainty and promise out of the mathematical equation of free enterprise. Investment capital is flowing out of this country - and trillions of dollars are on the sidelines - not to be reinvested here until he is gone. Nobody will invest into the face of economic uncertainty. There is no profit in it. Increased tax rates, incomprehensible and unaffordable regulations, no access to the Courts and increased government intrusion into all segments of the economy. A third of the Country lives in households where at least one person accepts a means-tested government check (welfare... not including Social Security or Medicare). 46 million on food stamps, 23 million unemployed. Spiraling public debt. Total lack of accountability from government at all levels.
And half of the Country wants to vote for four more years. I don't get it.
