When venting an attic gets hidden.

When venting an attic gets hidden.

I know when there are upgrades to a home there will be a little bit of "changing" that goes on.

This is not good when the changing of the venting to the attic is nearly closed off.

Attics need to breath. This home has suffit venting but I could not confirm the vents were operating properly. You will see what I'm talking about.

In this first shot it's a look at the "GABLE VENTING" after the brick was installed by the owner of the home.

Closed off gable vent.

These "couple of slits in the brick" will not provide adequate ventilation for the attic.

Here is an inside look at the gable vent before it was closed off by the brick install.

Closed off gable vent in attic.

As other inspectors look at this picture they are saying the insulation is in backwards. Always install the vapor barrier (Paper) to the heated side of the home.

This home do'es have suffit venting but I could not determine if they were operating properly due to the amount of insulation in the attic.

Side beam in attic.

This is the look right inside the attic.

There was so much insulation in the attic I could'nt see behind the side beams, to see if the suffit vent were working.

Remember if you "Improve your home" make sure what you do is to code. And make sure it does not take something out of code.

Have a nice evening everyone.

Hi John and Irma.

There are so amny homes that are so called "improved" just to be damageing in another area.

Keep everything to code, they are in place for a reason.

Thank you for the comment.

Hi Clint.  Gun ports don't make good vents:)  Nice "live" wire over the vent.

Hi Conrad,

The wire was an old tv line that used to go to a  antenna.

Venting access cut by about 80%.

Not a good thing.

Have a great day in Webster my friend.

Hi James,

I had to laugh about the comment. But it's very true, "Uncle Bob" got there before me.

I hope you are feeling better. Has the FOP offered any help with your recovery at home?

Have a great day my friend.

Hi Wayne,

I think your right. If not for all the "Uncle Bob" jobs I would be posting about how bad the grass looks from lack of rain. :-)

Have a great day in Fort Myers.

Another nice and informative post Clint, maybe uncle Bob told this homeowner it was OK to block most of the vent.

Hi Al,

No matter how we look at it. It's just a wrong application af the owners way of thinking.

Have a good day in Ormond by the sea.

You are so welcome Roy.

I try to inform Realtors so they can see trouble coming from a mile away. This way they can inform the buyers of what they might expect in the inspection reports.

Have a great day in Virginia.

That brick layer must be an older one because I see gable vents like that on older homes around here.  Very similar actually!
