Recently I was asked to speak at Houston Baptist University to a group of students about marketing. What an awesome concept to do this, I wish I had this opportunity when I was in college. So of course it got me thinking, what are the steps to successful marketing…… here are my 6 Steps to Successful Marketing:
1. Be Yourself- In almost all marketing you do, you are actually marketing yourself. Whether it is a job interview, sales pitch or even getting a date you have to market yourself. No matter how great or awful the company is that you work for, when it comes to marketing the customer will remember the person. Most likely more than the product.
2. Keep Learning- Every marketing idea has been used before. And nobody expects you to invent a new marketing idea. Which is fine, because this means you can find great ideas every where. Billboards, radio, blogs, books, business cards and the list goes on………..
3. Commit- Once you get the idea for a marketing idea, commit to it. We all want to see a return on our work immediately, but sometimes that just does not happen. So commit to an idea and don’t give up on it just because you do not see a return on your work immediately. It may take some time, but if done correctly you will see the results you want. It took me over 6 months of Blogging before I had a closing from it. And now every month I am consistently closing deals where the client found me online.
4. Be Creative- Marketing is about getting someone’s attention, plain and simple. Don't be afraid to try ideas that others have, but with your touch to them.
5. Be An Expert- I can honestly say that by marketing myself as an expert on mortgages, my business has grown. Now, I did not position myself as an ‘expert” like most by calling myself an “expert’. Quite the opposite, I never call myself an expert but rather show it by giving as much knowledge as possible.
6. Enjoy it- Like my dad always told me “love what you do or don’t do it!”. If you don’t love marketing you won’t do it. So make sure you focus on marketing you enjoy. Not all marketing styles or approaches will work for you. So find the ones that you enjoy doing or you won’t commit to doing them. Marketing should not always be WORK, some times it should be fun.
When I was in college I would have died to been told this information. So I am super excited to pass along my 6 Steps to Successful Marketing, when I speak to college students at Houston Baptist University.
