153 Comments on Realtors Who Dislike President Obama....
Well I'm with you on this. I rarely share my political views. But hey if you want to know I'm a Democrat, a Christian and a Capitalist. Yes we do exist :)
I have no bumper stickers.
In general, I hate bumper stickers of all kinds. Why junk up a perfectly good car with them....especially ones that can turn folks off and not want to work with us.
LOL...this cracks me up. Don't you love the ones that say I put the post in MEMBERS ONLY or my FB page is only for friends. ANYONE can join ActiveRain and FB is not a private session no matter friends or not. Bottom line is that we all have our opinions on religion and politic. The only sticker on my car is my website and that's all anyone needs to know. BTW...I seriously thought about putting my TINKERBELL for President on my bumper but not many believe in fairies :)
Greg, I so agree that political affiliations should not be displayed because they could alienate prospects/clients, even referral sources. Like you, I won't post or discuss my opinion of either party. My partner once had a client tell him that they would not knowingly allow one from a certain political party in their home. That political party the borrower wouldn't allow in their home happened to be the one of my partner. The borrower not knowing his political affiliation meant we were still able to assist that person... it had nothing to do with politics but with being experts and providing excellent customer service. Great post and great advice!
I think there is no place in our business for such bumper stickers, no matter what side someone is on.
Greg: I understand what you are saying ... and I have written here on AR before, that personally ... I don't make the kind of money that would allow me to showcase or talk about my political beliefs too openly with clients or referral partners. I don't want to take the chance of offending anyone and/or losing out on the possibility of working with them towards a successful mortgage financing. And that chance does exist these days. But that said, that's MY opinion and feelings. Should another professional feel differently, I believe they have that right and the right to their own opinions and choices. If there are consequences, and they are willing to face them, take the chance, or accept them ... have at it. THEIR choice. As others have pointed out, having that choice is what makes this country so great ... and worth getting all worked-up about ...

Bbetween 42 and 45 percent vote the party line and won't cross the aisle so about 13% of the voters decide who will be President.
Good luck and success.

Greg: I have found that although I may lose some clients, and some referrals from other Realtors because of my political and "social" beliefs, I have also gained some clients, and also gained some referrals from other out-of-state Realtors who agree with my beliefs, and find it refreshing to have found a kindred spirit in a red state like Texas.
I want to add that whenever I do express my political, or my progressive religious or social beliefs... I always do so with what I think is a very well-founded post giving what I call "the whole story."
Also... when I express those beliefs... it is blatantly obvious that I am NOT dismissive of anyone else, or their own personal beliefs. In a well-functioning Democracy, all viewpoints should be welcomed. But, I must add that they should also be presented in a very civil, thoughtful and respectful manner.
It works for me.
By the way... no bumper stickers for me. Not here... LOL.
I want one of Fernando's bumper stickers.
Hi Dennis,
The race comment on this post was meant to be funny, because of exactly how you feel. I am no fan of card pulling that isn't warranted, believe me. The post is tongue n cheek. I find it humorous that ppl are running with the whole 47% thing. I also find it humorous what ppl say about Obama. I shake my head at a lot of it. I hope that helps.
Greg, you are 100% right - why should I NOT work with a client who does not share the same political views or opinion?
It's hard to judge other peope's behavior. Maybe the guy with the bumper sticker is less concerned about alienating potential clients than announcing his political preference. That seems foolish to people trying to do business with anyone, but perhaps he's not concerned about getting or not getting business.
I've been in sales for my entire professional career.
In all my sales training I have always been taught to never talk about politics or religion, never wear a necklace with a cross, to shave my face and wear a suit. Then I grew up and realized it was time to stand up for what I believe in. Being true to me.
There are no political or religious posts on my professional pages and I won't go out of my way in a "professional" environment to bring any of these things up (except for the HUGE, prominently featured, autographed OREGON DUCKS poster in my office), but I'm not afraid to share my personal beliefs if a client/potential client asks me a direct question.
If a potential client has the privledge of finding my personal account on Facebook, they'll see anything and everything I post as a person. An individual. An American. It is completely open to the public, just as the multitude of websites I have owned and operated through the years are.
I can accept whatever misguided personal beliefs they might have and I'm still willing help them with what I can help them with. (Which are a lot of "things").
If they believe differently and aren't big enough to accept my personal beliefs they should move on. Their money is no good here. I hope someone else can help them who is as good at what they do as I am.
Happy Monday. Stay blessed.
Well, the ONLY bumper sticker that has been applied to one of my vehicles was a "Drink Milk" bumper sticker. I did it myself, put it right on the back of the BMW I used to have.
Let's see, why don't I discuss either politics or religion either in a post or in real life....
Because on the whole, the discussion will turn nasty, people will say things to others that they cannot take back, because when talking about either many, many people turn from well educated, well meaning, kind people to something right out of a horror movie. They attack, they demean, they do not even consider that the other opinion may indeed have some validity.
I have very, very strong opinions about both. But I would rather keep my mouth shut on both. And I usually leave the room when the discussion starts up. Religion, politics, doesn't matter, I leave.
I need a new bumper sticker that says "Drink Milk".
Wow Greg, I'm not certain what's left to say! I applaud that you made this a PUBLIC post for starters...go free speech!
I would not necessarily not work with someone with a political leaning sticker one way or the other, unless it was a really hateful sticker. Hateful stickers, IMHO, are an indicator of intelligence level and open-mindedness...two qualities I do want to work with. If someone is that close minded then the deal is sure to get squirreled up anyway. As for me, if something occurs in our lives and there is political implication and to not open a conversation about it leaves me stressed and nauseous...I'm so going to talk about it, but only with respect and knowing that if someone reads it and decides they can't work with me...okay, I'm a big girl.
Greg:
I was taught by my Mom not to talk about religion or politics in polite society. My Mom knew what she was talking about. I am a Realtor. All I care about is your ability to buy or sell a home.
Just like Obama (whose job description is to represent everyone in the entire country--whether they agree with him or not), you are just the same. I do agree with you, and I arrived at your post from a link from an agent that did not agree with you. Why would I want to exclude a certain group from using my services? If I speak too much about chocolate, I may alienate those who believe in healthy diet, for example.
I am stunned every day at the things real estate agents say and do to offend their potential clients...
I agree, and I blogged about this very issue a couple of weeks ago. When yiou are dealing with large numbers of the population, you wil alientate 50% of them by taking a political stand...we are a divided nation now...
Paddy... I would rather be at risk with the half of the country that disagrees with me... than be totally invisible to everyone because of my silence.
