Alarm ClockWell not maybe half over, but I have gotten a lot done.  How you start your day will set the pace for how productive will be.

In the past I was an evening person.  Unfortunately I married a morning person.  After 13 years of marriage my wife Darnelle is finally changing me.

By 4:45am she has the lights on, TV turned to the news and the hair blower going.  If that is not enough she will begin to quiz me about the day's schedule.  No chance of going back to sleep at that point.  So what to do?

Many of you know that over the last year I lost a ton of weight.  The follow-up to that is now I am hitting the gym on a regular basis.  What better time to work out than 5:30 in the morning.  The phones aren't ringing.  I am already up and the gym is practically empty, giving me my own private work out area.  So off I go.  The most important part of this is that I don't have time to make excuses, I just take my vitamins, slip on my gym shoes and head to the YMCA.  So the end result is I have finally found a benefit of being married to a morning person.  Thanks to my morning person wife, weight lifting and cardio training has become a way of life for me.

After my trip to the Gym, I still have time to shower, dress, eat breakfast and return messages by 8am.  I even get some posting on Active Rain in by then.  That may not be a half a day's work, but its a great start.

Sleeping Kitty On Monitor Ye gads, I've been married to a 'morning person' two-thirds of my life...(almost 44 years) and it still hasn't rubbed off on me....I think I'm hopeless!

Now I agree that there's nothing better than waking up early! But 4:45am...wow!

I run at the Rose Bowl out here in good ol' Pasadena, CA but it's mostly in the later evening.

Randy - this is great - I am a morning person and a late night person - however I never seem to make it to the gym late at night - so, I should try mornings - glad you found a great way to start your day and keep up the good work

I've been converted by a morning person as well... There was a time where there wasn't a speck of blood flowing through my brain at 8AM.  Now, I love mornings.  I seem to get as much, if not more, done in the first few hours of the day as I do all the rest.  Now I do some of the more tedious work in the AM and it works great.

Randy -- I prefer working out in the evenings so that I can network as well as get in my workout.

Jesse & Kathy - One advantage of early morning or even late night is the phone isn't ringing.

Aziz - Networking is an advantage when the gym is more crowded.  I do get some networking in the mornings, but it is not nearly as many folks out then.

Randy - That is a great way to start the day.  Since I am a morning person I wished my husband was but not a chance.   I have some equip at home so I think I am going to go downstairs and workout in the morning; that should give me more energy to get through the day. You never know this post might have inspired me.

Randy - I'm  morning person, but if I were to hit the gym that early my whole body would rebel. That's a lot of weight you're lifting...Wow! I really need to go early and get it over with before my body knows what's going on. It will probably think it's still asleep and having a nightmare! Good for you Randy!

Well as you might know..I go at least three times a week..I didn't need to lose that much so I guess you needed an extra day or so then I but there is no way I'll be pumping iron at 530 am...I have to wait until about 830...and if the phone goes off it will have to wait until I'm finished...I won't bring the phone in with me so unless it is a life threatening event..it will have to wait...by the way...I probably don't bench as much as you...looks like about 185 you have there.

Your wife is also a "night person".  She gets up in the middle of the night.

Geez.  I start my day about 6:00 a.m. but my joints don't even work untill about 9:00 a.m.

Randy, I'm definitely a morning person too.  By the time my wife wakes up, I've usually been active for about 3 hours!

Randy, I am a morning person and like your wife. I leave my hubby alone for a couple of hours and then start making noise. I get us at 4:00 am and he follows around 6:00. It's good. I blog my little brains out while he is still sleeping. Good for you on the weight loss and exercise. I need to fit in the eating healthier and exercise. It will have to be in the evenings or during the day....I must do it. Thanks for the incentive.

There is so much to be said for getting up bright and early and having that time for yourself.  I don't care if it is working out, praying, thinking about the renovation you want to start, staring at the kids while they sleep; it makes no difference.  A little extra time for me in the morning makes all the difference in the world.

Monika - I know that if I take a break, I never get going again.  I am careful to get at least least three days in the gym and try to do something else on the opther days if possible, like shooting baskets or something.

Lenn - Until I started going the the gym I could never get used to being up that early.

Randy I am a night person who has been married to a morning person for 33 years, and all the hairdryers and TV's could not get me up on a regular bases at 4:30 AM.  Nothing can keep me awake at the hour of the morning :)

Hi Randy,

You are so right about the effectiveness of beginning you day early. I say I'm going to every year, yet I've got a long way to go to get to 5:30, yikes. BTW, I did not know you lost a ton of weight, congratulations! One question, does you wife have any idea you said: Unfortunately I married a morning person." lol.

Randy - we're alike in the weight loss and the new habits. Hit the gym at 5:30 am. I've been the morning person all along (as usual, married to a night owl) so for me it was giving up my quiet time, best work time, and blogging time, but it's been worth it.

Good for you, Randy. You should be very proud of your accomplishemtn. The dedication is so important, even if it is somewhat the result of your relationship...but that kind of inspiration can be the best! I'm lazy - not up til 6 but at the gym usually 5-6 days per week unless the schedule gets out of control.
