We all know the history of the telephone and how it has evolved over the past century. What I did not realize was how much phones have evolved over the past decade - but Grandma's birthday this past week provided a good reminder. My mother celebrated her 79th birthday on Friday - Happy Birthday mom! All of her grandchildren made their phone calls to wish her the best. The oldest grandchild, 17, made his call only to receive a BUSY SIGNAL - a sound that he had never heard before and left him totally confused! He did not know why he did not either reach Grandma or go directly to voicemail. Of course grandma's phone is attached by a cord and does not have call waiting, phone company voicemail, and it produces an odd sound - a BUSY SIGNAL.
I asked my kids if they knew what a Busy SIGNAL was - girls 8 and 12 also looked confused but sort of knew but could not put their finger on it. So with that I am chalking this one up to a generational gap and dating myself as I do know what a BUSY SIGNAL is and recall the first cell phones that came in a shoe-sized box. I am a young 49 years old but feel a little older after Grandmas birthday and the phone incident. We are very fortunate to have smart phones at our disposal but can your smart phone make a BUSY SIGNAL??? Grandma's phone can!
