The Evolution of The Phone - Grandma's Birthday and a Busy Signal???

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty One Group - www.FindCARealEstate.com BRE# 01708749

We all know the history of the telephone and how it has evolved over the past century. What I did not realize was how much phones have evolved over the past decade - but Grandma's birthday this past week provided a good reminder. My mother celebrated her 79th birthday on Friday - Happy Birthday mom! All of her grandchildren made their phone calls to wish her the best. The oldest grandchild, 17, made his call only to receive a BUSY SIGNAL - a sound that he had never heard before and left him totally confused! He did not know why he did not either reach Grandma or go directly to voicemail. Of course grandma's phone is attached by a cord and does not have call waiting, phone company voicemail, and it produces an odd sound - a BUSY SIGNAL.

TelephoneI asked my kids if they knew what a Busy SIGNAL was - girls 8 and 12 also looked confused but sort of knew but could not put their finger on it. So with that I am chalking this one up to a generational gap and dating myself as I do know what a BUSY SIGNAL is and recall the first cell phones that came in a shoe-sized box. I am a young 49 years old but feel a little older after Grandmas birthday and the phone incident. We are very fortunate to have smart phones at our disposal but can your smart phone make a BUSY SIGNAL??? Grandma's phone can!

If you are looking for Orange County Real Estate I promise to not have a BUSY SIGNAL - I am an Orange County Real Estate Agent and Broker Owner of Ventana Coastal Properties and I look forward to your call - 949-500-0484.

It's been a long time since I have heard a busy signal David.   I still remember them and even remember when my Grandma had a party line.

David- this a such a cute post.  I can remember what it was like before anyone had answering machines or voice mails.  When i was placing office support staff and we needed to reach an applicant, we would dial her numbre and put the line on hold.  It was called a fish.

Jim - busy signals are rare - I still call "Grandma" so I get them occassionally! Regards Dave

Kathy - it's crazy that was not that long ago! Regards Dave

Michael - there are some benefits to a slower pace - Grandma will probably outlast many with a quicker pace! Regards Dave

49, you're a kid.  Not only do I remember busy signals, but I remember party lines...........where you shared with some "stranger" in the neighborhood.  If they were using the line, you couldn't.  Now I've dated myself big time.  Great story though Dave.  You can delete this if you'd like, I'm over my 10 comments for the day, so no points will be lost and no more mysteries created.  LOL.

This is too funny.  When ever I hear a busy signal, I think I have dialed the number wrong or something given that they are so rare in today's world.  I do know exactly what one is though and remember the evolution of the phone for sure.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

I'll venture a guess that there are a few folks who have never heard of a dial tone either.  If they know of a dial tone, they probably have no idea why it's called "dial" tone.  What the heck is a dial?

Hi Brenda - now days it is a rare network busy signal and not Grandma on her phone! Regards Dave

Hi John - will be interesting to ask your grandkids if they know - guessing I know the answer. Thanks, Dave

EJ - good point - many people have dropped their landline phones - no dial tone and no dial. Regards Dave

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

I remember when everybody had call waiting. I had it too. And then the thought occurred to me that I did not have to be instantly available all of the time and there was nothing wrong with a busy signal and, in fact, it was kind of rude to interrupt a conversation to take another call even if it was to say I'd call them back, so I got rid of call waiting.
