Delicious Ice Cream in Portland at Salt & Straw

Unless you've been sleeping this past summer (and I write past, because it's Fall 2012 already) you know what I'm talking about when I talk Salt & Straw and the delicious Ice Cream concoctions they are churning up.

Salt & Straw all started with someone's dream, and it manifested in to (so far) two local scoop shops.

I went on a pilgrimage to Salt & Straw in Portland for some Ice Cream yesterday for two reasons:

The Portland Oregon Connection to Ice Cream Cones

"The earliest cones were rolled by hand, from hot and thin wafers, but in 1912, Frederick Bruckman, an inventor from Portland, Oregon, patented a machine for rolling ice cream cones. He sold his company to Nabisco in 1928, which is still producing ice cream cones as of 2012." ~ Wikipedia.org

Salt & Straw is one of the best ice cream shops from coast-to-coast and I just had to try the ice cream deliciousness.

What Flavors Can You Savor At Salt & Straw Ice Cream?

You are NOT going to believe the flavors -- for every palette, indeed.

I sampled the Brown Buttered Popcorn with Pink Peppercorns and the Ceviche with Habanero chili, soon to be a Salt & Straw classic.

Unfortunately, my palette really isn't that sophisticated, so I settled for the Almond Brittle with Salted Chocolate Ganache at the Salt & Straw.

DELICIOUS! Brilliant paring of crunch, salt, almond brittle in their wonderful 17% butterfat ice cream base.

Flavors You Can Savor

Honey Balsamic Strawberry with Cracked Pepper ~ Chocolate With Gooey Brownies ~ Sea Salt Ice Cream with Caramel Ribbons ~ Double Fold Singing Dog Vanilla ~ Cinnamon Snicker Doodle ~ Coffee and Bourbon ~ Pear With Blue Cheese ~ Brown Ale With Bacon ~ Lemon Basil Sorbet ~ AquaBeet~ Cream of Bone Marrow with Smoked Cherries.

The flavor board will change seasonally

Salt & Straw Thinking Locally

With every combination of flavor there is a story . . . a connection . . . a romance of flavors and friends.

I'm telling you, eating this is just as good as knowing the wonderful stories behind each flavor. The logistics along on just getting the ice cream ingredients is staggering! The nice folks at the Salt & Straw donate to Family Dogs New Life Shelter, a no kill shelter.

We're Salt & Straw, Portland's farm-to-cone ice cream shop. Our ice cream is handmade in small-batches using only all-natural dairy with the best local, sustainable and organic ingredients Oregon has to offer, as well as imported flavors from small, handpicked farms and producers around the world. We start with local cream from Lochmead Dairy in Eugene, Oregon. All their cows were born right there on their third generation, family farm – so we know it's the highest quality we can get and super fresh.

One of the best local posts I have ever seen. My ice cream palette isn't sophisticated enough for cerviche, either, but the almond brittle sounds delish.

I love adventure and I think I would taste most of them.  Bone Marrow?  not so much.  You did make me NEED ice cream though.

Hi Susan -- I'm a simple woman with simple tastes ;-) -- but I do sample the exotic!  Thanks for the compliment on the post.

Hey Tammy -- I thought beef with ice cream and said "Why not?"  Beef Strogonaff is beef with dairy (sour cream) so it does blend on the palette (not very Kosher, however LOL).  But I'm with you, I didn't taste it.  When you and Donald visit, we'll go here for sure!!

Hi Karen . . . Stone Cold is really a "creamery" -- the ice cream is creamy (which allows them to fold stuff into it).  Salt & Straw is ice cream consistency and I enjoy it all.

Thanks Michelle!!  Maybe they Fex Ex to Florida?!?  LOL

Carla, the Salt and Straw sure seems to come up with unique flavor combinations.  I'd sure like to sample a few of the ones I've never considered.  Best of luck to the Salt and Straw for continued success.
