It Wasn’t Exactly 2 Cans & a Piece of String, but It Was Primitive!
First, I’d like to apologize to the many cats, dogs and parakeets whom I drove crazy during the years when I was trying to find your master a job.
This post was inspired by one written today by David Grbich “The Evolution of the Phone.....” It has nothing to do with Home Staging. So inasmuch as Monday’s are busy for everyone, I would understand if you wanted to move on to another post. (Hey.. you’re already here... might as well take a glance at it!)
In his post, David spoke of how his children did not know what a busy signal was. In today’s world, if you’re trying to reach someone on the phone, you could leave a voicemail if they didn’t answer. Or, you could text them.
Well, I can remember when there were no answering machines much less voice mail. They did not become a household name until the mid to late 60’s. Not everyone had one.
Many, many years ago in one of my previous lives, I was a Placement Consultant in Houston, finding jobs for secretaries, administrative assistants, accounting clerks and others. Often we needed to reach our applicants immediately to let them know of an appointment. In those days you couldn’t just leave a voicemail or send them a text if they didn’t answer.
So... what we did was call our applicant and let it start to ring...then place their number on hold. (for those of you youngsters out there, that meant you pressed the “red” button ).
We called this a “fish”. When the light went out, that meant someone had picked up the line, therefore someone was home. So we could then call them and tell them about their appointment.
You can see why I owe an apology to all those pets who sat there while the phone just kept ringing.
What a long way we’ve come... now courtesy of Voice Mail, Text Messages, FaceBook, Twitter you can be in touch with someone and never have to speak to them!
