It Wasn’t Exactly 2 Cans & a Piece of String, but It  Was Primitive!

First, I’d like to apologize to the many cats, dogs and parakeets whom I dog answering the phonedrove crazy during the years when I was trying to find your master a job.

This post was inspired by one written today by David Grbich  “The Evolution of the Phone.....”   It has nothing to do with Home Staging.   So inasmuch as Monday’s are busy for everyone, I would understand if you wanted to move on to another post.  (Hey.. you’re already here... might as well take a glance at it!)

In his post, David spoke of how his children  did not know what a busy signal was.  In today’s world, if you’re trying to reach someone on the phone, you could leave a voicemail if they didn’t answer.  Or, you could text them.

Well, I can remember when there were no answering machines much less voice mail.   They did not become a household name until the mid to late 60’s. Not everyone had one.

Many, many years ago in one of my previous  lives, I was a Placement Consultant in Houston, finding jobs for secretaries, administrative assistants, accounting clerks and others.  Often we needed to reach our applicants immediately to let them know of an appointment.  In those days you couldn’t just leave a voicemail or send them a text if they didn’t answer.

So... what we did was call our applicant and let it start to ring...then place their number on hold.  (for those of you youngsters out there, that meant you pressed the “red” button ).

going fishingWe called this a “fish”.   When the light went out, that meant someone had picked up the line, therefore someone was home. So we could then call them and tell them about their appointment.

You can see why I owe an apology to all those pets who sat there while the phone just kept ringing.

What a long way we’ve come... now courtesy of Voice Mail, Text Messages, FaceBook, Twitter you can be in touch with someone and never have to speak to them!

BARFF I loved Dave's post, I mentioned "party lines" in my comment to him.  This is a great story too, I definitely see why you apologize to all those poor pets who had to listen to that constant ringing.

I love the story of how we used to communicate. I think that we all have taken for granted how easy it is to communicate today Kathy.

Kathy, I bet if we think hard enough there will be a whole bunch of things we take for granted now that was unavailable to us just a few short years ago.

Kathy.. i too remember those days.. The new catch phrase that I laugh at is "mid century furniture/decorating".. Sounds like we are talking about Henry VIII or better yet Napoleons time.. NO.. it is back to when I was little and furniture from the 60's.. (oops.. just dated myself) seriously? sounds archaic.. I must be getting old.. LOL

Dorie- it can be good and bad, can't it.  You can impart some quick info without having to get into a lengthy call but we're missing out just speaking to someone.

Toni- a few years ago when I had to leave my phone at Verizon for about 1 1/2 hours for something, I decided to run errands and then return for the phone.  I was disoriented because all my lists for shopping were in the phone.

Debbie- it was strange.  But it's what we did to reach our applicants.  Can you imagine doing that today.

Dianne- Remember how monumental it was when we got call waiting.

BARFF- I remember hearing about party lines but I don't think we had one.  That is funny that kids don't know what a busy signal sounds like.

Kristin- "back in the day"... ugh, old age is settling in.

Tom- and just think, it wasn't that long ago.  My first cell phone was the size of a brick.

Sharon- we are and I love it!

Malcolm - too many things... think about the microwave.

John (QMan)- look if you're older than dirt then I'm .... well I'm older than whatever is older than dirt.

Brenda- absolutely!  Competition could be tough so we had to reach them.

Janis- you may be getting old, but I AM old! LOL   I know.. when they first started talking about mid-century furniture, I had to stop and think about it, then realized that it was during my youth.

I never thought until right now that the younger generations really don't have a clue what a busy signal is.  That is freaking me out.  I feel old.

I had never heard of that idea before, Kathy.  Thank goodness we don't have to do that anymore.  Can you imagine the dogs howling, and the cats hissing, and the birds prancing back and forth?  I can!

BARFF- seriously?  I guess so many things are sent to the cleaners too.

Toni- thank you!  I just saw it!

Chris Ann- you feel old?  It's hard to believe they haven't heard of a busy signal.

BARFF- hey, we're a team... both are elbows are rubbable.

Ron- I feel so bad now... but, we did what we could to get them placed.

Joan- I have no idea where we picked up that idea but it worked. Gosh I feel old.

Thanks Kathy, brings back memories, shortly before graduating from college in the mid 80s our career adviser recommended that we make the big investment in answering machines so that employers could find us, it was a huge investment back then but it did pay off with a quick job offer.

Bob-oh how funny!  But, what a great piece of advice he gave you.  When we were placing office staff, it was the hardest thing sometimes trying to reach an applicant.
