Chimney Fires and Safety Precautions!

By
Real Estate Agent with The Romanski Group/ Keller Williams Realty

A chimney fire destroyed a local Lafayette IN home in the early hours this morning.  Fortunately, everyone made it out safely!  Firefighters said that the cause was easily preventable.  Some suggestions as we move into cooler temperatures and the desire and likelihood of you using your fireplace is increased....

1 - have your chimney checked annually and cleaned!

2 - make sure your chimney and fireplace are safe prior to use

3 - check your fire alarms - test them to make sure they all work

4 - make sure your exits are not blocked

5 - add safety ladders to second floor rooms in case of emergency

If you are considering selling your home, you should consider having your chimney inspected and cleaned prior to listing your home.  Same true if you are purchasing a home, you may want to consider having a certified Chimney Sweep clean and inspect your chimney/fireplace.

Be aware of the dangers involved with chimneys and furnaces.
