First and foremost I would like to think One Hit Wonder Central for providing the research data and youtube for providing the videos for this blog. I started thinking about doing this blog a couple of weeks ago and never could find the time. The music in here refers to the band producing a number 1.
2008 and 8 is starting out to be a Great Year. With that said, I know there were a lot of groups in the past that thought the same thing. 8 is great, so lets focus on the last 4 decades and I want to take you down memory lane.
In 1968 the band Vanilla Fudge release "You Keep me Hanging on". Now, at first, I did not recognize the song and then it dawned on me that Kim Wilde redid this many years later. When I started to watch the video, the first thing that popped in my head was "No wonder this group only got one, the lead singer is stoned out of his mind". Whether that is the case or not, it made for an interesting video and more over, an interesting version of a song I once knew. From that time on, the band was never really heard of again on a national level even though they have produced several albums over the last 4 decades.
In 1978, Alicia Bridges hit the DISCO scene with "I Love the Nightlife" and got people to shake their booty on the dance floor during the 70's disco era. Funny thing is, when I started out doing this research and I came across this song, it floored me. I used to skate to this song as a kid every Friday night at the Roller Rink. Sure enough Alicia lit up the floors in 78 with this great song, but what happened after that. She did not go invisible, but for the foremost, there was no more number 1s.
In 1988, Climie Fisher came out with "Love Changes (Everything)". When hearing the name, most people thing that it was one person when in fact, this was 2 guys whose names where Simon Climie & Robert Fisher. Oh how creative we were in '88. Now, since this great number 1 hit the stands, this group has yet to top the charts again, but they are still out there.
In 1998, Semisonic topped the charts with "Closing Time". This band is still semi active, however, the lead singer, Dan Wilson is still quite active. He might be better know as a song writer than a singer, but he is good at both. Since the mainstream in '98, Dan and the group have still be playing but have never really busted the charts again.
Ok, so, you say enough music trivia and enough walking down memory lane. Get to the point.
OK, OK. Here is my point. Are you going to allow yourself to be on the board once in 2008 or are you going to strive to place every month. years ago I was in the car business and anyone that sells cars will know what I am talking about when I say that you have to make the "BOARD". In the mortgage industry, as a branch manager, for years we had a huge white board that hung in the front of every office. On this board broke down every loan officer and their production for that month. I do not have to tell you the ribbing a loan officer got from their peers if they did not make the board.
I have walked in to Real Estate offices and seen the same thing. It is a competative nature and it drives you to success.
So I ask you, are you will to push to make the board every month or will you be a 1 hit wonder?

Danny I have to say you did some digging for these. I had to listen to a couple of them to remember the song. Now as to the board, I have been at companies that did this and while it does push you to want to compete it can also be a bit daunting for the newer agents especially if you have one or two in the office that seem to get everything.
But that really isn't the point, the point is many of us out there that were just flying by the seat of our pants to stay on the board need to step it up. We need to stop being complacent with what we are doing and make a statement I may not get on that board every single month in '08 but I am gonna dang sure try and with the help and encouragement I find here in the RAIN I am sure to succeed.
Linda, shout it from the rooftops girl. I believe you are. And I agree, it is not the fact that you got to be on the board every single month as much as you got to be pushing to get there every month and if you hit 6 out of 12, call it success.
Great analogy between the 1 hit wonders and us in the real estate business. I enjoyed the videos (prefer the Kim Wilde version though . Now, as for being on the board in '08...I'm sure I will be on there quite a few times this year and our company will be on it for sure!
As Linda said...now's the time to step it up! And this is the perfect place to start!
The 1 hit wonder that comes to my mind is Maxine Nightengale's Right Back Where We Started From....The Old SNL did a sketch on Maxine's Nightengale's Greatest Hit from K-Tel!They just played it over and over...LOL
I second Cris' comment, this is a very creative and appropriate analogy. I think we should all have our own "board" of sorts. I didn't recognize 2 of these until I listened to them and I have no idea who Maxine Nightengale is?!? <<<smile>>>
DANNY - This was an interesting post, and it was fun to see the song "Closing Time" mentioned. I saw Semisonic years ago when this song was popular. I knew someone in the music industry that was dating one of the guys in the band. We were at Irving Plaza in NYC. It was a great show, and of course, they closed with "Closing Time." That song probably has the most impact in this post because we all need to be "closing" to get on the board.
I love one hit wonders! There so many really good ones. I don't want to BE one, though. Got to step it up! You keep me hanging on is one of The Supremes biggest hits. Vanilla Fudge really mangled it! I love the Semisonic hit, but I never remember who did it. Thanks!
