Tips to Cut Home Utility Bills - Energy Tips.  So how do you make a difference in your energy and utility bills going forward?  First you should consider doing an energy assessment of your home's energy use.  How to do this energy assessment?  Hiring an energy auditor through your own electric company is one way to go.  The auditor money from energy tips in ri real estatecan take thermal imaging of your home to show areas where the warm air is escaping.  Then the auditor can recommend energy effective solutions to improve your energy usage.  Go to the Department of Energy web site for more energy tips but for now use these as follows:

- Wash your clothes in cold water
- Do FULL loads of laundry and dishes to avoid wasting energy and water
- Clean the dryer lint filter after EVERY laundry load to improve air circulation, speed drying and eliminate the chance of dryer fire.
- Take showers instead of baths and install low flow shower heads in all showers
- Fix leaky faucets around the house.  Install water saving faucet attachments
- Install energy efficient light bulbs
- Bring more natural light into your home through windows and skylights, reducing the need for artifical lighting during the day
- Turn off appliances or lights not in use
- Unplug block type chargers ( i.e. laptop or cell phone) when not in use.  Remember that your charging device is still using electricity if it is plugged in
- Turn desktop computers off when not in use for extended periods of time
- Get a programmable thermostat and have it installed.  Don't heat or cool space at a stay at home temperature when you are not home!

Make good energy changes in your home living style today and start saving some bigger change (kaching $$). Christmas is coming is it not?!

Hi Ginny,

All good things to do and very sound advice.

But try drying the clothes outside on the clothes lines. This will save a ton over the years.

Of course in the winter I say the heck with the lines use the dryer. LOL

Have a great day in North Kingstown.

Best, Clint McKie

Good morning Ginny -

What an excellent list of how to save money and energy.  I think we're on board with most of your To Do's.  We don't use the pig tail light bulbs in pendant lights or in the ones that are on dimmers.  Dimmers blow the bulbs.  We are very conscious about turning off things in the office when we walk out the door for any length of time.

Hi Ginny.   Guilty of leaving all charging things plugged in.    Nice list for saving energy and money and a good reminder for me to unplug!

Ginny, coming into the colder months, the timing of your post is excellent!     It is nice to save a few $$ on our bills, and I only run my dishwasher every 4-5 days (when I run out of coffee cups) and still hang out my clothes rather than using the dryer.   Plus, they smell better!

Great list, Ginny. There are so many things one can do.

Another suggestion - run your major appliances at off hours, based on the hours provide by your utility company. As an example, we can save alot of electricity in San Diego County if we run the DW, W and D before 10 am and after 6, and our power company provides credits if you sign up for saving power on certain days. Great incentive, and it's good for everyone, especially when it's hot an AC is running everywhere.
