An exhibit of John Cuthbert’s Art, “A Little Slice of Winter in the West Virginia Mountains”, will be on display at the Cooper Gallery of Fine Art, October 5-31, 2012  A reception will be held on Friday, October 5 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

 

John Cuthbert says, “I have always been excited by a bright winter day.  As a boy growing up in New Hampshire, I looked eagerly forward to each fall to the arrival of show as a source of beauty, recreation and even a creative medium for crafting forts, figures or whatever else struck one's fancy."

 

"When I moved to West Virginia in 1975, I found that it snows only rarely in the major river valleys where most people live.  But in the mountains, often just a few miles away, there are places of unparalleled winter beauty that endure throughout the season.  Those places continue to fascinate me."

"The art in this exhibit depict locations, mostly in West Virginia’s northern mountains, where snow, pine and water converge.  The word “slice” in the title is a reference to the fact that these works were all painted, not with a brush, but with a palette knife, more specifically, a ninety-nine cent plastic mixing knife."


 

"Sketched on location, but often completed in front of a warm fireplace, some are more realistic than others.  The difference rests in the day, the weather, the light, the temperature and the mood these factors evoked on a particular day.  There is no aim, goal or message other than to try to capture and communicate the look and feel of the scenes I love.”
