Hello My Smartphone - What's New With You?

By
Education & Training with Tech Training for You!

little bit of competition with the makers of smart phones is (some of the time) a good thing for consumers. [I had to rethink and backtrack on that thought a minute. Competition is what gets them to sue each other for rounded corners on icons and pinch to zoom gestures. They might as well patent breathing too. Ok so let's not go there, it is a complete waste of time!]

What I had wanted to write about was the type of competition that innovates new ideas and features. Both Android and iPhone have recently come out with updates. For Android, some models are able to get the 'Jelly Bean' update also known as Android 4.1.(The previous version was called 'Ice Cream Sandwich' v4.0 and before that was "Gingerbread" v2.3 -- Honeycomb v3.x was in between but mostly getting ready for tablets only -- Googlers like sweet things apparently! Whether your phone is able to update either to 4.0 or 4.1 depends both on your manufacturer and carrier to agree that the update is ready to go on your specific phone. Your phone will alert you when it is ready to update!)

If you have an iPhone, or are getting an iPhone 5, you will be able to see the latest iOS 6. The Apple v. Google competition heats up in 6 as Apple has removed Google Maps and the native YouTube App. If you want the YouTube App you are able to download and install it (fortunately). However the Google Maps app is, at present, not available. It has to finished being developed and then submitted to get through the apps approval process. Meanwhile, users are complaining about Apple Maps not being nearly as accurate! I'm sure it will be fixed soon enough. However it is something to consider about if you should update now or wait a while.

If you would like to see a list of features for either of the updates, you can click on the images below to go to the 'what's new' pages for both Android and iOS.

And...
if you are still using BlackBerry, my condolences. Here's a text version of Angry Birds that you might like playing :)

I have a droid for the last few years and I'm thinking about changing to the new iPhone. I bought the new iPad used off the Internet recently and love it. For instance one thing I could not do on my droid was leave comments on active rain but I can on my iPad. I wonder maybe some fellow active raiders can let us know if they can leave comments on their iPhone?

I have the Sprint EVO Craig.  It is one that came out with the new 4G system.  They update me often.  Should I assume I already have this?

Dick - sounds like you are DUE for the new iphone?? :)

Michael - I have the Galaxy Nexus and can comment just fine on AR. Maybe that was an issue with older versions android? If iPad works for you, I would assume iPhone will do similary based on similar OS. Ask around in AR, I'm sure lots with iphones can tell you for sure.

Jay - if you go to your phone settings icon look for "about phone" then look for "android version" - you will see a 3.x or a 4.x - my notes above tell which is which (gingerbread, ice cream sandwich, jelly bean)

Craig, I have a Droid, and I hate it. I'd almost prefer to have a Blackberry. =)

Wallace - I found it helpful to go through the lists and not miss anything cool on the updates

Lynda - not all androids are created equal! many times manufacturer will muck up the interface with their 'enhanced' version. That's what I appreciate about my nexus. No manufacturer muck to the pure android.

Ha!  Mine says Android version 2.3.5!  So I don't have the new one.  There is no sweet wording, but it isn't into the 3 or 4 range.

Jay - thanks for coming back. I was wrong - thanks for making me look - 2.3 was gingerbread, 3.x was honeycomb, 4.0 was ICS, and 4.1 was jelly bean - 2.3 really jumped to 4.0 because the honeycomb update was focused on the tablet transition - meanwhile you are still pre-version 4 though. :(

Very informative post. Thank you for sharing the knowledge. Currently, I have the Iphone 4 and it seems impossible to keep up with the constant upgrades Apple comes out with. There will always be something with more features than what you have out there.

Craig, in retrospect, I should have waited a while before downloading IOS6.

Hi Craig,

Looks like fun but it doesn't appear my Samsung Infuse will be getting the upgrades!:(  Will have something to look forward to for my next phone though!

Thanks for sharing!

Jeantets - not all the updates will matter, usually there are a few that really help us out. That's is why I like to keep an eye on the "what's new" pages to make sure I don't miss an important feature

Ritu - it is good stuff (both sides of the apple-google fence)

Chris - apple has a lot at stake (reputation) to make it right - I'm sure they will act fast where needed :)

DeeDee - very sad that some devices don't upgrade - hope you can get your newer phone before too long of wait :)

I installed the new Apple operating system on my iPhone and I love the voice directions on the map feature, which I didn't have before - love that feature even if it isn't Google maps.

I have the 4s - easy to comment on AR, and email is good.  Other than that, I cannot think of anything nice to say about the iPhone, can't wait to upgrade to an S3.

Tatyana - I saw my first iPhone 5 today on the commute - hope you enjoy yours soon!

Virginia - I have respect for the iPhone, but my choice is Android and S3 is the phone to have now IMO

Hi Craig,

I find it very interesting how all the phones compete with each other.  I was talking the other day about how I love the commercials for Galaxy phones, but I don't know anyone who owns them.  So how are you suppose to get the max out of them??  I'll stick with my iphone.  I love it!
