When is my Landlord Required to Turn on the Heat in my New York City Apartment

New York City Home Heating Season

From October 1st, 2011- May 31st 2012

New York City Landlords are required to provide heat as follows:

Between the hours of 6:00am and 10:00pm if the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees, the inside temperature is required to be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit

Between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am , if the temperature outside falls below 40 degrees, the inside temperature is required to be at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

 

As alway if you are having a heating problem first notify your landlord, if your problem continues  call 311

I had no idea you were required to keep a certain temp. in your New York rental.  Of course I have never lived there, but the thought never crossed my mind!

Hi Michele, thanks for sharing the great information. The landlord in Florida have to provide heat without the temperature limit because the long term tenant is paying for the electric bill.

Of course if the utilities are separately metered and the tenant pays for the heat then the landlord has not responsiblitiy for maintaining a certain temperature.
