26 Comments on The Deadline made me do it!
Andrew - In this business I have learned to get things done early because we may miss an important opportunity or have to deal with a client crisis. Nothing can be left to the last minute as things come up too fast in this business.
Many people need to feel the pressure or stress as a motivating factor to get something done as opposed to be self-motivated...You see it everywhere you go. Its the drama, the unnecessary extra, the molehill into a mountain, making a federal case out of something, dynamics at work...it doesn't have to be this way...but it is..excellent post here...thank you
Andrew: In this business you even have to help the other agent with HIS deadlines. One reason to get ours out of the way as quickly as possible.
So true that being prepared is so much better, must have been a boy scout!
I too like to have my real estate work done ASAP and with most other things I am proactive too.
Yes. I work much better with a "Drop Dead" Deadline..
Wise words. I had to chuckle about Christmas shopping, I tend to procrastinate. This year, I'm having foot surgery in November so I have been stockpiling gifts and am about ready to start my wrapping. It feels GREAT!
Deadlines for my goals . .that's when I use them . .otherwise, I like to have everything done before I'm supposed to. .
I am always doing things early, especially when it comes to home inspections. I want those done and negotiated so nothing holds us up.
Andrew-very sage advise, in real estate it's best to stay on top of things because we have so many unexpected things that come up.
Giving yourself a deadline helps motivate you..that's what I've found. Now if only sellers would do the same! I'm constantly trying to work on a plan w/them to get the house ready to sell...some comply, some constantly put it off!
I usually have daily deadlines, to ensure tasks get done on the day and don't carry over into the next days.
I can pull out all stops when I need to, but perfer to plan ahead.
I am a deadline person, except in Real Estate. Being prepared early is also a great stress reliever. Slowly my real estate hablits are leaking into other areas. So soon I will always be prepared.
Andrew:
I am one of those who procrastinates almost all the time. I am always one of the last people to post my blogs for activerain challenges.
Andrew, 'Never put off util tomorrow what you can do today" is a wise saying that I often say to myself the last thing at night when I push myself to do just one more thing.
Sharon
It makes me to paranoid to wait to the last minute in Real Estate, too much can happen wrong, the liability is too great.
It is not far from being like a boundary...which I find very useful. Both dynamics allow the participants to know where they stand
Great blog post- so very true. Thank you for sharing.
How interesting that with that "deadline" imposed by the public outrage of the Green Bay - Seattle game, the NFL has now completed their negotiations with the referrees. Did it surprise anyone? :)
Yes, Lenn, being prepared and DONE is indeed the name of the game.
Hey, Harry and Caron, how did you know I used to be a Boy Scout, haha.
Mike, I think you make a great point, because common sense tells us that if we are hurrying last minute, we are definitely more likely to make mistakes. Being done early allows us to even check and make sure we haven't made any mistakes.
Richie, Adrian, and Rhonda - Thanks for the compliment. :)
Hella, isn't that a sad reality that we find ourselves, so many times, having to do much of the other agent's work too. Just another reason to be done early so to check their work too.
Janna - Good luck with that foot surgery and sounds like you are prepared for that wrapping of presents - my address is ..... haha. I am sure the recovery will go faster enjoying the spirit of the holidays and wrapping.
Fernando - love your comment about deadlines being for goals. So true.
Mary, that reminds me of a guy who wanted to sell as soon as he did repairs ABC. Then a month later, he wanted to repair DEF. Months later after repairs RST, I was convinced he never really wanted to sell in the first place.
Karen - love the photos background for your profile. We are over near you in Laguna Beach frequently.
Sharon - Sage advice indeed.
Monique - great point ....... why expose ourselves to the "liability" by having done something quickly at the last minute?
