Steel wheels on steel rails. As green as it gets! There is just something about trains. Just the notion of these hulking steel behemoths being set into motion can stir even the most passive onlooker.

Railroads are energy-efficient and cost-effective. In today’s lingo, they are the most “green” of all land transportation systems.

And oddly enough, the technology that was literally “set into motion” in the 19th century was nearly lost to factors of convenience rather than conservation.

Modern locomotives use the same kinds of fuel technology that we see every day in the automotive industry. They pollute less and deliver more!

Cities that are served by railroads have always been more prosperous and offer higher standards of living.

And not only that, they are just fun to watch!

In the Midwest traveling around, as a kid we used to count the cars. Some of the times there were 200 or more.

Good morning Richard,

We rode the trains this summer from Berlin to Munich and onto Vienna and traveling couldn't have been easier or more comfortable!

Monday night when Donald and I were watching "Revolution" I asked... but wouldn't steam engines still work.  We both decided yes.  Timeless and beautiful.

Richard - Magnificent era ~ major progress. Your writing brought back to me these lines  from an Australian bush poem:

The flaunting flag of progress.

Is in the West unfurled,

The mighty bush with iron rails.

Is tethered to the world. (Henry Lawson ...)

We live in a place where we get to see freight trains on a regular basis.  They are fun to watch.

Hi Richard,

I think taking a train would be a great way to cross the country.  I think I will add it to my bucket list!
