Even though we often think of autumn as the beginning of the end of the year, there’s always a lot of energy and bustle that goes along with it. Here in Northern Virginia, there are new adventures to be had when the leaves begin to turn, events that tap into our rich history and our wonderfully diverse lifestyle.
This time of year is busy with harvests, and farmers markets are brimming with fresh vegetables and fruit. Our forefathers would have taken advantage of this time by preserving this abundance to see them through the winter. Now you can, too. The US Botanic Garden in collaboration with FRESHFARM Markets is offering a free demonstration on the basics of canning on Saturday, September 29th from 12:00-1:00 PM in the Conservatory Garden Court. There’s no preregistration required, and there will be samples for all and giveaways for a lucky few.
Autumn also conjures up images of a bright harvest moon, the full moon that occurs close to the autumnal equinox in late September. In Vietnam, this signals the time for the annual children’s festival, and the Vietnamese Cultural Center of Metropolitan Washington will sponsor their Mid-Autumn Children’s Festival at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington on Sunday, September 30th. Join in one of the largest Vietnamese cultural gatherings in the region, and experience traditional music and dance along with games and celebrations.
Fall also signals the time for migrations and hibernations. The Arlington Department of Parks and Recreation offers a whole line-up of nature-based, seasonal activities for adults, school age-children, families, and “wee ones,” too. Bird walks, cider making, volunteer opportunities, a book club, stargazing and more are on tap for the season. Many are offered free of charge, although pre-registration may be required. To keep up with it all, visit their website, or sign up to receive The Snag, a quarterly email newsletter, with the department’s complete calendar of events.
Our Northern Virginia culture is as diverse as our landscape, and just as wonderfully textured. There is always something new to see or do, and there’s never been a better time to own your own piece of the region. With continuing low mortgage interest rates, and a real estate market that’s picking up the pace, the Sullivan Group is ready to help you take advantage of the opportunity.
