Pet Showers a good idea that is NEW, SMART, PRACTICAL!

dog shpwer A few months back, a local business owner and  myself were talking about how nice it would be if we had an easy way of cleaning our dogs at home. It led us to talk about a mobile dog wash business. (true entrepreneur spirits) While doing the research and crunching the numbers,  we realized it was not a viable business. With the ideas resting not so quietly on the back burner, we continue to drag our unwilling dogs to the groomers. I don't know about her but my grooming bill for one little house puppy is $1200 a year! These little indoor dogs live long lives, sometimes 14 to 15 years. Now we are talking big money...around $17,000 in just grooming for the lifetime of one little itty bitty dogie!

In an article published in Rismedia November 30th written by Mark Nash titled "What;s in and What's Out with Home Buyers in 2008", he lists some obvious and not so obvious changes but wait...item four in the What's In category is, you guessed it, PET SHOWERS!

For an estimate of about $4,000 you can build a very desirable and fashionable PET SHOWER in a laundry room or garage! With a pet shower I would be saving and estimated $13,000 on the care of one spoiled pup. I too am predicting that the Pet Shower is going to be the HOTTEST new ticket in property assets.

The photo above is taken from a very cool custom tile site by Margaret Licha Designs and it prove that dogie showers are the new buzz word for pet owners.

What do you think?

If you need to build a pet shower you can find many of the components online.  One example is the Kitchen and Pantry web site (http://www.kitchenandpantry.com/)  thirr pet shower section is: https://www.kitchenandpantry.com/ProductList.asp?ProductCategoryID=2026

Sheron,

Since I have 2 dogs my grooming bill is over $2400 a year. Thank God I don't have to send them to college!

Saw that one, very interesting what we have to spend our money on.  I think survival mode in our country is quite different from most other places in the world.  When we have the kind of discretionary income that allows a nail salon on every corner, we know we're not really hurting too badly.

Doug - great links...thank you!

Susan - thank goodness LOL

Terrylynn - I decided to have Buddy shaved yesterday and I think this is the way to go. He only needs to go to the groomers every 4 weeks now. I can live with that! I was uncomfortable with the grooming expenses and as my mother always said "There's more than one way to skin a cat!"

I knew somebody who out fitted their house with a doggie shower and an out door dog run with a disposal on a cement pad years ago. Paid off big time. Helped to sell the house later too.

A disposal sounds ineresting, but best placed in a sink so you can control what goes down it.  Kohler has a sink that is like a shower pan, so I guess you could combine both.  Should be designed carefully though.

Oh my, this is just great. My husband is not going to be happy as I have just added this to my Honey Do List :) Love it!!!!  AMERICANS SPEND 41 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR on their pets. Do I think its a viable item for property - you bet I do.  I am a little ashamed to say that I spent $700.00 in September/October on our new puppies Petey and Tootsie's clothes, leashes, and toys.  That did not include the vet visits.  I spent just $85.00 on clothes for my daughter during the same time. Maybe I should turn her shower into our pet shower:)

Sheron, When my wife and I built our vacation home (on a small lake) we designed in one bath specifically to be the "dog bath".  It is located right next to the door where the dogs enter and exit and has a walk in shower set up with a hand held nozzle for showering the dogs when they come in all muddy and smelling like the lake !  You are right on the mark !

Doug - thank you for the links. I like the height too...a real back saver.

Kym - LOL! Sometimes we should avoid adding things up :)

John - I had never heard of doggie showers until recently...I love the idea of every new home including them even if they are a simple warm/cold faucet with a drain in the corner of the garage. I am still bending over the bathtub :(

Nora - yes, yes, yes!

Gayle - amazing! Rachael Ray had a show on yesterday about her dog and gourmet living/food for dogs. I Tivo'd it and will post the recipes when I write them down. Rachael even makes a dog smoothie.

I think this is a fantastic idea!  so many committed pet owners in Hawaii would be into this concept!  I would also venture to suggest that positioning a coin-op pet bath near the local dog parks might prove a viable business!  What a concept.

Donna - a friend of mine and I talked about the coin operated dog wash and came to the conclusion vandalism and mis-use would/could eat up any profits to be made. Then we talked about a building like a Tuff Shed with 2 to 4 dog washes inside and an attendant. That could work!
